DEFINITIONS
D-1
BASIS WEIGHT
The weight in pounds of a ream (500 sheets) of paper cut to a given standaird size for that grade.
COMMODITY PAPERS
Term used to classify low-end qualities of papers. Commodity paper grades include book, copy, envelope,
form bond, laser, ledger, offset, opaque. Commodity tissue grades include napkings, facial and bathroom
tissue.
FIBER
A thread-like body or filament, many times longer than its diameter. Pajper pulps are composed of
cellulose fibers, usually of vegetable origin, such as woods and grasses.
INTEGRATED MILL
A paper mill that manufactures its own pulp.
POST-CONSUMER FIBER
Paper, paperboard, and fibrous wastes from retail stores, office buildings, homes and so forth, after they
have passed through their end-usage as a consumer item.
RECOVERED PAPER '
Paper that has been recovered or diverted from the solid waste stream. This does not include those
materials and by-products generated .from, and commonly reused within, the original manufacturing
process.
SPECIALTY GRADES
Papers made with unique characteristics and properties suitable for specific purposes or in accordance
with special order specifications. These grades usually cannot be used for anything other than their
intended special purpose. Specialty paper grades include bond & writing, bristols, carbonless, cotton-
fiber, cover, index, tablet, and text. Specialty tissue grades include deep colored tissue, wipes, wrapping
material, and protective packing.
TISSUE PAPER
Category of papers characterized by extreme lightness and transparency. Used to manufacture a broad
range of products including napkins, bathroom and facial tissue, sanitary products, wrapping material,
protective packing paper, stock for waxing and twisting, etc. ,
TOWELLING PAPER ,..,..'••,
A class of highly aborbent paper with fairly good strength properties. It is made especially for industrial,
domestic, and institutional wiping purposes.
