This list was prepared for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by Jaakko Poyry
Consulting, Tarrytown, NY.  The information contained in each listing was obtained from
a variety of publicly available sources which are deemed reliable, and was supplemented
with data provided by individual companies/mills.  However, Jaakko Poyry Consulting
does not warrant or guarantee the accuracy or completeness of the enclosed information.
This list-represents the latest available information as of September"29, 1994.

The listings are arranged alphabetically by corporate  name and  include mills in both the
United' States and Canada.   Each listing is comprised of the following:

•     Main address
•     Name of person to contact for additional information -  this contact is not always
      located at the main address and in cases where, the company has more than one
      mill, a general contact is given
•     Description of the mill/company
•     List of  recycled content brands  including  brand  name,  grade,  total  and

DEFINITIONS
D-1
BASIS WEIGHT
The weight in pounds of a ream (500 sheets) of paper cut to a given standard size for that grade.

BRIGHTNESS
A measure of the degree of reflectivity of a sheet of pulp or paper for blue light measured under specified
standard conditions.  Same as whiteness.

FIBER
A thread-like body or filament, many times longer than its diameter.  Paper pulps are composed of
cellulose fibers, usually of vegetable origin, such as woods and grasses.

GROUND WOOD PAPER
Any paper that is made from a furnish containing a large percentage of mechanical pulp.

INTEGRATED MILL
A paper mill that manufactures its own pulp.

NEWSPRINT
A grade of paper made especially for use  in the  printing of  newspapers.   Newsprint is the most
inexpensive paper available that will withstand printing and contains mostly mechanical (groundwood)
pulp.

MECHANICAL (OR GROUNDWOOD) PULP
Pulp produced by reducing pulpwood logs and chips into their fiber components by the use of mechanical
energy, via grinding stones, refiners, etc.

POST-CONSUMER FIBER
Paper, paperboard, and fibrous wastes from retail stores, office buildings, homes and so forth, after they
have passed through their end-usage as a consumer item.

RECOVERED PAPER
Paper that has been recovered or diverted from the solid waste stream.  This does not include those
materials and by-products generated from, and commonly reused within, the original manufacturing
process.
