The Brownfields Economic Redevelopment Initiative
empowers states, communities, and other stakeholders
to work together to address the economic redevelopment
of abandoned sites that have been used for industrial and
commercial purposes. The U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency's (EPA) Technology Innovation Office (TIO)
offers assistance to brownfields stakeholders in meeting
the challenges of site cleanup and redevelopment.
TIO encourages the use of smarter solutions for
characterizing and cleaning up contaminated sites by
advocating more effective, less costly technology
approaches. To achieve that goal, TIO works with
representatives of government, both inside and outside
EPA, and industry to identify better, faster, and cheaper
options for cleanup.

TIO is pleased to announce the availability of the third
edition of the Road Map to Understanding Innovative
Technology Options for Brownfields Investigation and
Cleanup (EPA 542-B-01-001). Developed for use by a
broad audience of users, the third edition will assist
brownfields stakeholders identify and select innovative
site characterization and cleanup technologies for
brownfields redevelopment.
Used together with the accompanying CD-ROM, the Road
Map provides a general outline of the steps involved in a site cleanup and introduces brownfields stakeholders
to the range of technology options and available resources. The Road Map and CD-ROM help decision makers
at brownfields sites identify and understand the full range of technology options for assessing, and, if necessary,
addressing contamination at a site.

The Road Map, which includes approximately 70 new resources, updated resources, and one-page "spotlights,"
identifies potential technology options available at each of the basic phases involved in the characterization and
cleanup of brownfields sites—Site Assessment, Site Investigation, Cleanup Options,
and Cleanup Design and Implementation. The Road Map is not a guidance document;
rather, each section describes the steps involved in the characterization and
cleanup of brownfields sites and connects those steps with available resources.
Appendices in the Road Map include a list of common contaminants found
at typical brownfields sites and technologies that may be appropriate for
use at brownfields sites, a detailed guide to common environmental terms
and acronyms, and a list of state and EPA points of contact. An alphabetical
index of resources is also provided.

The Road Map CD-ROM is organized by the same sections. Each of the
resources identified in the Road Map can be viewed or downloaded directly
from the CD-ROM, or accessed or ordered on line using links provided on the
CD-ROM. The resources can be searched alphabetically by title and by section.
