Remediation System Optimization
Website
Introduction
The Federal Remediation Technology Roundtable has
developed a website containing information related to the
optimization of remediation systems. The location of the
website is:
www.frtr.gov/optimization
"Optimization" is used here to refer to changes that
achieve one or more of the following:
> enhanced protectiveness of human health and the
environment
> reduced cost
* technical improvement
t- faster cleanup or increased likelihood of site
closeout
Website Contents
The website contains of five major categories related to
remediation system optimization:
(1) General Information. Provides links related to
broad-based system optimization:
t- methods, such as the Remediation System
Evaluation process developed by Army Corp
of Engineers and the Remedial Process
Optimization process developed by the Air
Force
> information on a project to optimize
Superfund-lead pump-and-treat systems (i.e.,
financed and operated by USEPA)
> links to other documents pertaining to broad-
based system optimization
(2) Monitoring Optimization. Provides links to
approaches to increasing efficiency, reducing cost,
identifying uncertainty, and increasing reliability of
long-term monitoring, organized as follow:
> data quality objectives and long-term
monitoring guidance
> well placement and sampling frequency
> sample acquisition (field procedure)
> contaminants of concern and indicator
parameters
> data management and data evaluation
(3) Simulation Optimization. Highlights the use of
mathematical optimization techniques coupled with
groundwater simulation models to determine
optimal pumping locations and rates for plume
containment and/or cleanup:
> hydraulic optimization - based on simulations
of groundwater flow
> transport optimization - based on simulations
of contaminant transport (concentrations,
cleanup times)
(3) Treatment Technology Optimization. Provides
information on specific in situ and ex situ
remediation technologies.
(4) Workshops and Meetings. Provides links to past
and future workshops or meetings that pertain to
optimization of remedial systems.
Other Information
The website is evolving. Information is added
approximately every two-months. In part, this is done by
soliciting information and feedback from individuals who
have performed work referenced in the website links. In
addition, there is an option at the bottom of each page to
e-mail suggested additions and/or modifications to the
website content.
