MtBE Treatment Profiles: A New Website on MtBE Treatment Technologies EPA has prepared profiles of drinking water and remediation sites that treat soil and groundwater for methyl tert-butyl ether (MtBE). The MtBE profiles are accessible at http://clu-in.org/products/mtbe. What is MtBE and why is it of concern? MtBE is an oxygenate and an octane booster that has been added to gasoline. When gasoline leaks or spills, such as at a service station with leaking underground storage tanks, soil and groundwater may become contaminated with MtBE. Such contaminated media poses risks to drinking water supplies and the environment. Why develop a website with MtBE treatment profiles? Site managers need site-specific data to help select appropriate treatment approaches at remediation sites and for drinking water contaminated with MtBE. What types of data does this website contain? Profiles on the website contain data on completed and ongoing applications of treatment for MtBE in drinking water and contaminated media. As of March 2002, the website included 244 MtBE treatment profiles. What types of information does a profile provide? A profile describes the use of in situ and ex situ technologies to treat MtBE in groundwater, soil, and drinking water at specific sites. Each profile has a varying level of detail, depending on the data and information that was available. Some of the profiles include active links to more detailed case studies, which present in-depth information about the treatment sites. What specific information does a profile provide? To prepare the profiles, EPA obtained data from site managers, regulatory officials, and technology providers, as well as published reports, conference proceedings, and other available reference materials. How can I search the website? The website can be searched in two ways - using a pick list for selected parameters or using the list of all available profiles. The website includes pick lists for contaminant, media, technology, scale, status, state, and site name. Search results are listed alphabetically by site name. Where are the full case studies on the website? Profiles that have more detailed case studies (in pdf - format) are identified on the results page. The results page will indicate that a case study is available and provide a direct link to that case study. How can I submit a new profile or update an existing one? EPA encourages project managers, site owners, and technology vendors to update existing MtBE treatment profiles or add new profiles to this website. A user may select the "Update an MtBE Treatment Profile" button to add more recent data, add data for more fields, or correct errors in existing data. A user may also submit a new profile by selecting the "Submit a New MtBE Treatment Profile" button. Information submitted through the website is reviewed by EPA prior to being made available to the public. ------- What are the future plans for this website?
