INTRODUCTION TO Vendor FACTS

The Vendor Field Analytical and Characterization
Technologies System (Vendor FACTS) is a database'
developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency's (EPA) Technology Innovation Office (TIO)
and the National Exposure Research Laboratory - Las
Vegas (NERL-LV). Vendor FACTS was developed to
disseminate much-needed information on innovative
techniques for site and waste characterization and to
promote the use of more cost-effective methods for
on-site monitoring and measurement. The database
will contain information provided to EPA by vendors,
suppliers, and manufacturers on the applicability,
performance, and current use of their products. It will
serve as a tool for professionals involved with the
cleanup of hazardous waste sites to gather information
and assess new monitoring and measurement
technologies. EPA plans to release the database in the
third quarter of 1995. The database will be available
free of charge to the public.

TECHNOLOGIES INCLUDED

Vendor FACTS will contain information on
technologies that EPA believes are currently the most
innovative or may provide the greatest opportunity for
streamlining the site assessment process. EPA is
seeking out technologies that meet the following
criteria for inclusion in Vendor FACTS:

• Fieldable technologies: portable or transportable
equipment for on-site monitoring, screening, and
    analysis of hazardous substances. Equipment
used for collecting samples for off-site analysis will
    not be considered

 • Technologies for monitoring and characterizing
contaminated sites, not industrial process waste
    streams

 • Technologies that fall- into one of the following
    categories:
Air measurement (National Ambient Air Quality
       Standards)
Analytical detectors (such as flame ionization
       detector)
       Analytical traps
       Biosensors
          Indicators based on chemical reactions
          Cone penetrometer chemical sensors
Downhole sensors - saturated or vadose zones
          Fiber-optic chemical sensors and analyzers
          Gas chromatography (portable only)
          Ground-penetrating radar
          High-frequency electromagnetic (EM) sounding
          High-resolution seismic reflection
          Immunoassay
          Infrared (long-path) monitors
          Mass spectometry (portable only)
          Nuclear magnetic resonance
          Soil gas analyzer systems
          Supercritical fluid extraction
          Thermal desorption devices
          Transient electromagnetics (EM) geophysics-
          Voltammetric stripping
          X-ray fluorescence analyzers

    FEATURES OF Vendor FACTS

Vendor FACTS uses a database structure similar to the
widely distributed Vendor Information System for
    Innovative Treatment Technologies (VISITT), which
was developed by the Technology Innovation Office to
    disseminate information on innovative Hazardous
waste treatment technologies. Vendor FACTS will
contain vendor records that allow screening of
technologies by parameters such as contaminants,
media, and development status. The system will be a
DOS-based, menu-driven database that requires very
little setup time and will be available on diskette.
Vendor FACTS also will be available as a
downloadable file on EPA's Cleanup Information
    Bulletin Board Systems (BBS).

    OBTAINING AND SUBMITTING INFORMATION FOR
    Vendor FACTS

Vendors interested in submitting information on their
products for inclusion in Vendor FACTS should request
a Vendor Information Form (VIF) by fax at (513) 489-
8695 from the National Center for Environmental
Publications and Information (NCEPI), P.O. Box 42419,
Cincinnati, OH, 45242-0419. A request form for
obtaining the Vendor FACTS VIF and database is
. printed on the back of this bulletin. The deadline for
submittal of the completed VIF is April 30, 1995.
