United States Environmental Protection Agency Office Of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (51Q2G) EPA 542-F-96-C)32 June 1997 Fact sheet &EPA Promoting Innovative Technologies at Brownfields Sites The Brownfields Economic Redevelopment Initiative empowers states, communities, and other stakeholders to work together to address the economic redevelopment of abandoned sites that have been used for industrial and commercial purposes. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Technology Innovation Office (TIO) offers assistance to Brownfields stakeholders in meeting the challenges of site cleanup and redevelopment. TIO encourages the use of innovative and cost-effective technologies to characterize and clean up contaminated sites. To achieve that goal, TIO works with representatives of government, both inside and outside EPA, and industry to identify better, faster, and cheaper options for cleanup. , TIO is pleased to announce the availability of two guides which introduce Brownfields stakeholders to technology options and available information resources. The guides link technology options to the general steps involved in the characterization and cleanup of a Brownfields site. The publications help Brownfields decision makers identify and under- stand the full range of technology options for assessing, and, if necessary, addressing contamination at a site. Road Map to Understanding Innovative Technology Options for Brownfields Investigation and Cleanup The Road Map identifies potential technology options available at each of the basic phases involved in the characterization and cleanup of Brownfields sites—Site Assessment, Site Investigation, Cleanup Options, and Cleanup Design and Implementation. The Road Map is not a guidance document. Rather, each section describes the steps involved in the characterization and cleanup of Brownfields sites and connects those sieps with available technology options and supporting technology information resources. Appendices in the Road Map include a list of common contaminants found at typical Brownfields sites, a detailed guide to "' common environmental terms and acronyms, and a list of state and EPA Brownfields points of contact. Tool Kit of Information Resources for Brownfields Investigation and Cleanup The Tool Kit provides abstracts and access information for a variety of relevant resources, including electronic databases and bulletin boards, newsletters, regulatory and policy guidance, and technical reports. The Tool Kit describes the resources identified in the Road Map, explains how to obtain the publications, and provides a "starter kit" of important information resources to help Brownfields stakeholders understand their technology options. See the reverse side for information on ordering these guides. i Printed on Recycled Paper ------- &EPA Promoting Innovative Technologies at Brownfields • Road Map to Understanding Innovative Technology Options for Brownfields Investigation and Cleanup • Tool Kit of Information Resources for Brownfields Investigation and Cleanup To Obtain Copies of the Guides Download a copy free of charge from the following on-line sources: Clean-Up Information (CLU-IN) WWW site http://clu-in.com CLU-IN Electric Bulletin Board 301-589-8366 (modem 8-N-l) For private sector parties, purchase a hard copy from: National Technical Information Service (NTIS) 5285 Port Royal Road Springfield, VA 22161 Telephone: 703-487-4650 (regular service) or 800-553-NTIS (rush) For government (Federal, state, and local) parties, order a free hard copy from: National Center for Environmental Publications and Information (NCEPI) U.S. Environmental Protection Agency P.O.
