United States Office of Solid Waste and ERA 542-F-98-010 Environmental Protection Emergency Response July 1998 Agency (5102G) EPA On-Site Incineration: Overview of Superfund Operating Experience Information on cost and performance of on-site incineration can be valuable to remedial project managers (RPM) and other decision makers responsible for site cleanup projects. To date, these data have been limited. To provide additional information about operating experience for completed projects, the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Technology Innovation Office has prepared fifteen case studies and a summary report that provides an overview of these applications. The summary report, entitled "On-Site Incineration: Overview of Superfund Operating Experience", provides: 1) an overview of on-site incineration technology, including incinerator design, air pollution control systems, and regulatory requirements, 2) a summary of the 15 case studies, 3) detailed technology and operating descriptions for each application, and 4) general observations and lessons learned about these applications. Information for the report was obtained by reviewing information in EPA's regional and state environmental agency files and from interviews with RPMs, other site decision-makers, and technology vendors. The report was based on the case studies of the following Superfund sites: Baird & McGuire, MA Petro Processors, LA Bayou Bonfouca, LA Rocky Mountain Arsenal, CO Bridgeport Refinery and Oil Services, NJ Rose Disposal Pit, MA Celanese Corporation, NC Rose Township Dump, MI Coal Creek, WA Sikes Disposal Pits, TX FMCCorporation-YakimaPit,WA Times Beach, MO MOTCO,TX Vertac Chemical Corporation, AR Old Midland, AR Ordering information for this report is presented below. The report and the 15 case studies are available on EPA's CLU-IN web site (http://clu-in.com).
