Federal Remediation Technologies Roundtable:
New Developments in Cost and Performance Data
FACT SHEET
New Products
The Federal Remediation Technologies Roundtable is announcing several products to
improve remediation of contaminated waste sites. The following materials were developed
jointly by member agencies of the Roundtable:
A revised guide which lays out an interagency strategy for documentation and
management of cost and performance information for site remediation projects
86 new case studies of full- and demonstration-scale remediation technologies -
these describe a wide variety of ex situ and in situ applications for both soil and
groundwater, including soil bioremediation, solvent extraction, thermal desorption,
soil vapor extraction, groundwater pump and treat, air sparging, in situ
bioremediation of groundwater, permeable reactive barriers, on-site incineration,
and surface cleaning of debris
An improved web site which allows searching and access to 140 case studies
Significance of New Products
The selection and use of more cost-effective remedies requires better access to historical
data on performance and cost. To make this information more widely available, member
agencies of the Roundtable are working jointly to document case studies of full-scale
remediation and demonstration projects.
The products developed will:
Increase the availability of standardized data to help compare technologies and
improve remedy selection
Provide a baseline of information about conventional technologies that can be used
as a benchmark for evaluating innovative technologies
Provide a framework for streamlining future data collection and reporting efforts
What is the Federal Remediation Technologies Roundtable?
The Federal Remediation Technologies Roundtable is an interagency working group that was created to
build a more collaborative atmosphere among the federal agencies involved in remediation of hazardous
waste sites. Member agencies recognize the importance of documenting the results of cleanups and the
benefits to be realized from a coordinated effort. The Roundtable consists of senior executives from eight
agencies with an interest in site remediation and meets twice each year to coordinate the exchange of
information and to consider cooperative efforts. A Cost and Performance Work Group was created to
develop procedures for documenting and distributing case studies. Primary contributors to this cost and
performance effort include the U.S. Departments of Defense and Energy, and the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency. Other participants include the U.S. Department of the Interior, Nuclear Regulatory
Commission, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Tennessee Valley Authority, and the U.S.
Coast Guard.
