For Technology USERS
Do you need reliable information about remediation and
characterization technologies? Would you like to know about sites at
which those technologies are being implemented? EPA REACH IT can help.
EPA RErriediation And Characterization Innovation Technologies (EPA REACH IT) is a new
system that lets environmental professionals use the power of the Internet to search, view,
download, and print information about innovative remediation and characterization tech-
nologies.
What will I find in SPA REACH IT?
EPA REACH IT combines information from three established U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) databases, the Vendor Information System for Innovative Treatment Technologies
(VISITT), the Vendor Field Analytical and Characterization Technologies System (Vendor
FACTS), and the Innovative Treatment Technologies (ITT) database, to give users access to
comprehensive information about remediation and characterization technologies and their applica-
tions. It combines information submitted by technology service providers about remediation
and characterization technologies with information from EPA, the U.S. Department of Defense
(DoD), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), ancl state project managers about sites at which
innovative technologies have been deployed. Those sources together provide you with up-to-
date information, not only about the technologies you can use to characterize or remediate a.site,
but also about the sites at which those technologies are being used and the vendors that offer them.
EPA subjects all information provided by technology service providers and EPA, DoD, DOE,
and state project managers to review for reasonableness and consistency. EPA REACH IT also
identifies information that originated from an EPA source. The EPA logo appears on the screen
whenever such data appear. Therefore, you can distinguish between data supplied by service
providers and data provided by government officials.
Will EPA REACH IT give me spedfa in formation?
EPA REACH IT identifies specific vendors or service providers, describes the product
or technology each offers, and provides summar/information about sites or projects at
which a particular product or technology has been used. The system also provides data
from EPA sources about Superfund sites and federal facilities at which innovative tech-
nologies have been used. Because the system is Web-based, it gives you the on-line
information you need to screen and assess technologies quickly and efficiently and all'
just a mouse-click away.

For Technology PROVIDERS
Are you looking for a cost-effective way to market your innovative
treatment, field analytical, or characterization technologies to deci-
sion makers who are directly involved in selecting technologies for
use at hazardous waste sites? EPA REACH IT is the answer for you.
*
Through EPA REACH IT, you can use the Internet to share information about the capabili-
ties of your technology with a virtually unlimited audience. More important, because
remediation professionals who are making real-time decisions about characterization arid
treatment methods use the system, you will be putting that information into the hands of
individuals who need it and are actively seeking it and who are the decision makers you
need to reach,
EPAexpectsto reach cleanup personnel and investors throughout the United States and
abroad by advertising EPA REACH IT in trade journals, at conferences, and through direct
mailings to an extensive list of potential users. That effort benefits you free of charge,
building awareness of, and interest in, a system that brings the facts about your technology
directly to those users.
Is there a tost involves! in being paif of SM RiACH IT?
EPA REACH IT is free to both providers and users of innovative technologies, so you can
become part of the system by investing only the time it takes to complete the Vendor
Information Form (VIF) for your technology. You can complete and submit a VIF electroni-
cally by using the on-line EPA REACH IT VIF at . Click on the
Data Entry System button on the EPA REACH IT home page and type in a username and
password of your choice. Youwill be prompted to confirm your password; once you have
done so, you can begin to complete the VIF for your technology immediately. Remember,
EPA REACH IT is a free service from EPA. The only cost to you is the time it will take to
complete the form. '
Once you have submitted information to EPA REACH IT, EPA will perform a technical review
before the data are entered into the system. The technical review process may take a few
weeks; you will be notified when your technology has been accepted and put on line.
Once your technology or technologies have been entered in EPA REACH IT, you can use
the data entry'system described above to update your information periodically. It's easy to
keep cleanup decision makers equipped with the most current information available about
your technology.

What technologies are eligible for inclusion in SPA REACH IT?
EPA offers the EPA REACH IT system to promote the use of certain categories of innovative
remediation, field analytical, or site characterization technologies. Eligible treatment technolo-
gies are those that are:
+ Innovative, that is, technologies that lack cost and performance data and currently are
not applied commonly, when their use can provide better, more cost-effective perfor-
mance than conventional methods
+ Designed to treat contaminated soil, sludge, sediments, or solids or to treat ground-
water or nonaquebus phase liquids (NAPL) in situ
*
4 Included in the categories of transportable thermal destruction or solidification and
stabilization, two categories of conventional technologies that have been made eligible to
expand the treatment options available to users of the system
Technologies thattreatgroundwater ex situ and incineration at a fixed location are ineligible
for listing in the system. Suppliers of components of a treatment technology (such as bacteria
for bioremediation) will not be listed in EPA REACH IT, unless they are listed as part of the
service provider's submittal, or unless cost and performance data are available.
Reid analytical and characterization technologies that are eligible for listing in EPA REACH IT
are such technologies as portable or transportable equipment for on-site monitoring,
screening, and analysis of hazardous substances. Stand-alone modeling software used in the
field to facilitate or expedite the characterization process is eligible for listing.
How much documentation of performance and other claims
is required?
EPA provides EPA REACH IT as a service to showcase vendors' technologies and capabilities. It
is in your best interest to provide information that is as accurate and complete as possible, since
lack of such information might discourage users from considering your technology. EPA reviews
each submittal for reasonableness and consistency. In some cases, EPA may contact you to
clarify information you have submitted. If it makes any substantive changes in your submittal,
the agency will give you the opportunity to review and comment on those changes. Remember
that EPA will list publicly available information or references related to Superfund sites or federal
facilities at which the technology or technologies similar to it have been used. '
