In situ treatment; in general, has seen increasing popularity.
In situ approaches offer potential for reduced cost, reduced
disruption at sites with ongoing industrial activity, and
reduced risk. Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) is a notable
example of an increasingly popular in situ technology.
EPA's Technology Innovation Office (TIO) will present
two all-day seminars on in situ thermal treatment. The
EPA Region 9 and the California Division of Toxic
Substances Control seminars will provide practitioners
. and decision-makers with essential and up-to-date
information on .this promising remedial approach.
Recent developments in in situ thermal treatment offer
the potential for improving the effectiveness while
reducing the costs of remedial actions. Thermal energy
can be applied to enhance the effectiveness of technolo-
gies such as SVE, and as a stand-alone technology can
be used to address semi-volatile and non-volatile
contaminants not readily amenable to vapor extraction.
The seminars will include presentations on the principal
methods presently employed to heat the subsurface to
recover or destroy contaminants. Technologies to be
discussed include:
- Dynamic Underground Stripping; Steam Enhanced
Extraction
- In Situ Thermal Desorption;
- Radio-Frequency Heating;
- 6-Phase Electrical Heating; and
- In Situ Vitrification.
The seminars Will include a discussion of fundamental
principles, design considerations and limitations, and
case studies. Although case studies will involve particu-
lar technologies and vendors, the purpose is to increase
the basic understanding of the capabilities of these
innovative approaches to remediation.
