ABSTRACT
This document illustrates the revised attainment/nonattainment
designations for the five criteria pollutants (sulfur dioxide,
total suspended particulates, ozone, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen
dioxide) for the States comprising USEPA-Region V (Illinois,
Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin). The infor-
mation contained in this report updates the original report
"Profile of Air Quality in Region V", EPA 905/9-80-004, of
June, 1980 .
The air quality designations detailed in these maps are based
upon information available as of March 15, 1982. These
attainment status designations are pursuant to the requirements
of Section 107 of the Clean Air Act, as amended in 1977,
and are codified in Subpart C of Part 81 of Chapter 1, Title 40,
Code of Federal Regulations. For additional information
regarding current air quality data, legal and procedural
requirements for attainment/nonattainment areas, etc., the
appropriate Regional, State or local environmental agencies
should be contacted.

For SO2 and TSP, the total nonattainment populations are the
sum total of those populations located in both primary and
secondary nonattainment areas. For those areas that are both
primary and secondary nonattainment, the population is only
counted once.
Population estimates are based upon the specific air quality
designations in conjunction with the data in Appendix 1, and
where necessary, by approximating the relative size of the
nonattainment areas from the graphical displays on the
individual State maps. The estimates are only rough approxi-
mations and should be used, as such. For detailed analyses,
specific maps (i.e. county, city, township, village, neighbor-
hood tracts etc.) and the most recent ambient air quality
data must be consulted.

For S02 and TSP, the total nonattainment populations are the
sum total of those populations located in both primary and
secondary nonattainment areas. For those areas that are both
primary and secondary nonattainment, the population is only
counted once.
2
Population estimates are based upon the specific air quality
designations in conjunction with the data in Appendix 1 and,
where necessary, by approximating the relative size of the
nonattainment areas from the graphical displays on the
individual State maps. The estimates are only rough
approximations and should be used, as such. For detailed
analyses, specific maps (i.e. county, city township, village,
neighborhood tracts, etc.) and the most recent ambient air
quality data must be consulted.

For SO2 and TSP, the total nonattainment populations are the
sum total of those populations located in both primary and
secondary nonattainment areas. For those areas that are both
primary and secondary nonattainment, the population is only
counted once.
2
Population estimates are based upon the specific air quality
designations in conjunction with the data in Appendix 1
and, where necessary, by approximating the relative size of
the nonattainment areas from the graphical displays on the
individual State maps. The estimates are only rough
approximations and should be used, as such. For detailed
analyses, specific maps (i.e. county, city, township, village,
neighborhood tracts, etc.) and the most recent ambient air
quality data must be consulted.
The entire state is either better than national standards
or cannot be classified.

16. ABSTRACT . ' ~ ——
This document illustrates the attainment/non-attainment designations for the five
criteria pollutants (sulfur dioxide, total suspended particulates, ozone, carbon
monoxide and nitrogen dioxide) for the states comprising USEPA - Region V (Illinois,
Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin).
The air quality designations detailed in these maps are based upon information
available as of March, 1982. These attainment status designations are pursuant tc
the requirements of Section 107 of the Clean Air Act, as amended in 1977, and are
codified in Subpart C of Part 81 of Chapter 1, Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations.
For additional information regarding current air quality data, legal and procedural
requirements for attainment/non-attainment areas, etc., the appropriate regional,
state or local environmental agencies should be contacted.
