La informacitin en este panfleto es similar
a la que la Agencia de Proteccion Ambiental de
los E.U. (EPA) espera distribuir una vez el
Programa de Proteccion de Especies en
Peligro de Extincion este en efecto. Aunque no
existe reglamentacion que limite el uso de
plaguicidas en estos momentos se provee
para que usted proteja voluntariamente las
especies en peligro de extincion, de dafios
causados por el uso de plaguicidas. Le in-
vitamos a que utilice esta informacion.
Ademas, le exhortamos a someter comen-
tarios.
La Ley de Especies en Peligro de
Extincion tiene como propdsito proteger y
promover la recuperacion de los animates y las
plantas que estan en peligro de extincion
debido a las actividades del hombre. Bajo La
Ley, EPA debe asegurar que el uso de los
plaguicidas que registra no resulte en dafios a
las especies en peligro de extincion, segun
designadas por el Servicio de Pesca y Vida Sil-
vestre (FWS), o al habitat crftico esencial a la
supervivencia de la especie. Para lograr esto
EPA implantara los requisites del programa tan
pronto como las etiquetas del plaguicida dirijan
al usuario a seguir estrictamente las limrta-
ciones de uso del producto. Este programa
protegera las especies vulnerables y en peligro
de extincion del dano causado por el uso del
plaguicida.
EPA solicrta sus comentarios en cuanto a
la informacion presentada en esta publication.

The information in this pamphlet is similar
to what the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) expects to distribute once our
Endangered Species Protection Program is in
effect. The limitations on pesticide use are not
law at this time, but are being provided now for
your use in voluntarily protecting endangered
and threatened species from harm due to pes-
ticide use. We encourage you to use this infor-
mation. We also welcome your comments.
The Endangered Species Act is intended
to protect and promote recovery of animals
and plants that are in danger of becoming ex-
tinct due to the activities of people. Under the
Act, EPA must ensure that use of pesticides it
registers will not result in harm to the species
listed as endangered or threatened by the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service, or to habitat critical to
those species' survival. To accomplish this, the
EPA will implement program requirements
once pesticide labels direct users to follow pes-
ticide use limitations. This program will protect
endangered and threatened species from harm
due to pesticide use.
EPA requests your comments regarding
the information presented in this publication.
Please drop us a line to let us know whether
the information is clear and correct. Also tell us
to what extent following the recommended
measures would affect your typical pesticide
use or productivity. This information will be
considered by EPA during the final stages of
program development.

Acercamiento A Localidad sur. El area sombreada en el
mapa se encuentra en los municipios de Isabela y Quebradillas.
Sus limites son: la interseccion de Quebrada La Sequia y el Rb
Guajataca por el norte, que se extiende 0.25 km (0.2 mi) al este
del Rio Guajataca que esta al oeste, 2.5 km (1.5 mi) al oeste del
Rb Guajataca que esta al este, y la interseccion de Quebrada
La Sequia y la Carretera PR 446 al suroeste. El habitat cubre
un area de 2.75 km (1.7 mi) de este a oeste y 0.1 km (0.06 mi)
de norte a sur.

Reduciendo La Escorrentia Y La Deriva
Listed puede disminuir el danp al ambiente,
reduciendo la exposici6n al plaguicida de especies
amenazadas p en peligro de extincion y mas, si usa
estas sustancias cuidadosamente. Utilizando medidas
de reduccion de escorrentia ("runoff") y deriva ("drift"),
como las que se presentan mas adelante, puede
retener mas cantidad del plaguicida que aplica en el
campo y reducir el costo de este.
Para Reducir La Escorrentia
Cuando le sea posible, use tecnicas que reduzcan
la erosion del suelo como to son el arado limitado
(limited till) y labrado de contorno (contour plowing).
Estos metodos tambi6n reducen la escorrentia del
plaguicida.
Use t6cnicas de aplicacion como lo son la
aplicacion en bandas T ("T banding") y la aplicacion
directa al surco ("in-furrowing"), cuando seafactible.
Estas t6cnicas incorporan el plaguicida en el suelo.
Cuando sea posible, use plaguicidas que no tengan
advertencias sobre aguas subterraneas en la etiqueta.
Los plaguicidas con estas etiquetas indican la
posibilidad de que el plagicida entre en contacto con

Mantengase informado sobre las condiciones del

La direccion y velocidad del viento y la evaporacion

Reducing Runoff And Drift
By using pesticides carefully, you can diminish harm
to the environment, reduce exposure of endangered
and threatened species to pesticides - and more. By
using pesticide runoff and drift reduction measures such
as those outlined below, you can keep more of the pes-
ticide you apply on the field and lower your pesticide
costs.
To Reduce Runoff
Where possible, use methods that reduce soil
erosion, such as limited till and contour plowing. These
methods also reduce pesticide runoff.
Where feasible, use application techniques such as
T banding and in-furrowing. These techniques incor-
porate the pesticide into the soil.
When possible, use a pesticide that does not con-
tain a ground water warning label. Pesticides with such
labels indicate a likelihood for the pesticide to enter
ground or surface water.
Keep informed about changing weather conditions.
Try to avoid applying pesticides when heavy rainfall is
expected.
To Reduce Drift
Wind direction, wind speed and evaporation are im-
portant factors in reducing drift. Most importantly, apply
pesticides when the wind direction is away from areas
of concern. Try to avoid applications during high winds.
Also avoid applications during the hottest part of the
day, when evaporation is highest.
When high winds and excessive evaporation are
not factors, use a drift retardant for aerial applications.
Use the largest droplet size compatible with the pes-
ticide coverage. Typically, higher spray volumes will
also result in less drift.

22 Do not use this pesticide in the shaded area within a 100 yard radius of puddles, created by periods of heavy rain,
that are four inches deep or more. Restrictions shall remain in place for 25 days after the puddles form.
28 Do not apply this pesticide within the shaded area, within 20 yards of the shaded area for ground applications,
nor within 100 yards for aerial applications.

About This Publication
This publication contains a map showing the area
within the municipality where pesticide use should be
limited to protect listed species. These areas are iden-
tified on the map by a shaded pattern. Each shaded
pattern corresponds to a species in need of protection.
The Shading Key shows the name of the species
that each shaded pattern represents and may describe
the shaded area. The area may be described in terms
of Township, Range, and Section or by giving details
about the habitat of the species.
The first column of the 'Table of Pesticide Active In-
gredients" lists the active ingredients for which there
should be limitations on use to protect certain species.
The next columns are headed by the shaded pattern of
the species with Codes listed underneath them.
The Code indicates the specific limitation that is
necessary to protect the species. The section titled
"Limitations on Pesticide Use" explains the code.
Does This Information Apply To You?
To determine whether this information applies to
your use of a pesticide, review the questions below.
The information applies only if you answer "yes" to both
questions:
• Do you intend to use pesticides within the shaded
area or additional areas described under the Shading
Key shown on the county map?
• Are any of the ingredients listed on the front panel of
your pesticide product label named in the 'Table of
Pesticide Active Ingredients?"
If you answer "yes" to both questions, you should
follow the instructions on "How to Use This Information"
to determine if you should limit use of the pesticide to
help protect listed species.
If you answer "no" to either question, you should fol-
low the usage directions on the pesticide product label.
How to Use This Information
1) On the municipality map, find the specific shading
patterns that cover the area where you will apply
pesticides.
2) Read the Shading Key for those patterns to identify
the specific area involved.
3) In the "Table of Pesticide Active Ingredients," locate
the active ingredients in the pesticide you intend to
apply.
4) Locate the code to the right of the active ingredient
name and under the shading patterns that apply to
you.
5) When using the pesticide, you should follow the limita-
tions indicated for those codes described under
"Limitations on Pesticide Use."
6) If you are applying more than one listed active in-
gredient or applying a listed active ingredient in an
area with more than one shaded pattern (species),
multiple codes may apply. If so, you should follow
the most restrictive limitation.
7) Read the information on Reducing Runoff and Drift on
the back of this pamphlet.
