INTRODUCTION
The HANDBOOK OF RCRA GROUND-WATER MONITORING CONSTITUENTS contains
physical and chemical properties of constituents listed in 40 CFR Part 264, Appendix IX.
Appendix IX is the list of ground-water monitoring constituents for permitted hazardous
waste treatment storage, and disposal facilities that are implementing the ground-water
monitoring requirements of 40 CFR Part 264 Subpart F.
Appendix IX was intended to be a "Irving1' list — to be updated and revised as analytical
methods are developed and standardized, and as research on the fate and transport of
specific contaminants in the subsurface advances. The constituents contained in this
handbook are those currently listed in Appendix IX however the Handbook also contains
constituents that are being considered for addition to or deletion from Appendix IX.
Those constituents that are being considered for addition to Appendix IX are indicated
in the Handbook by a single asterisk ( * ) following the chemical name. Those constituents
that are being considered for deletion from Appendix IX are indicated by a double asterisk
For each constituent listed in Appendix IX, the Handbook provides the following
information, as available:
1. Appendix IX Name:
2. CAS Name:
3. CAS Number
4. Empirical Formula:
The name of the constituent as it appears on Ihe list
of ground-water monitoring constituents listed in 40
CFR Part 264, Appendix IX. The Handbook is orga-
nized by Appendix IX name.
The name of the constituent as it appears in the
Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry.
The CAS registry number.
The chemical formula that provides the number of
each type of atom in the molecule. For metals, the
Handbook provides the chemical symbol.

5. Maximum Contaminant Level:
6. Molecular Weight
7. Boitag Point
8. Melting Point:
9. Spedflc Gravity:
The maximum permissible level of the constituent In
water which Is delivered to any user of a public water
system. Proposed maximum contaminant levels
(MCLs) am provided where final MCLs are not yet
available. If there does not exist a maximum con-
taminant level for (he constituent, (he notation "NA'
is presented In the tat New and revised MCLs are
conttnualy being proposed and promulgated under
the Safe OrfnUng Water Act and are published In the
Federal Register The most recent MCLs available as
of August 1902 have been induded In the text
The molecular or formula weigh to* the constituent In
grams/mole.
The temperature in degrees ceWus at which the
vapor pressure of the constituent In aqueous form is
equal to atmospheric pressure, except when an
alternate reference pressure for the constituent's
boiling point is otherwise noted.
The temperature m degrees celsius at which the
constituent in solid phase is In equilibrium with the
liquid phase at abnospheric pressure, except where
an alternate reference pressure for die constituent's
meittng point Is otherwise noted.
The ralo of the density of the consttjent ratafee to
(he density of water. SpecrRc gravity values are
reported in fte form: SG at T/T. where:
SO. Specific Gravity

If only one reference temperature is given, it repre-
sents Tc, with an assumption that T. « 4°C. If no
reference temperature was available for the
constituent's specific gravity, the notation [UT] is
presented after the value.
The concentration of the constituent (in milligrams
per Kief) that Is required to form a saturated solution
in water at Ihe referenced temperature. If no refer-
ence temperature was available for the constituenf s
solubility, the notation [UT] is presented after the
value.
The pressure (In mm Hg) of the vapor phase of the
constituent that is In equilbrium with its liquid or
solid phase at the referenced temperature. If no
reference temperature was available for the
constituent's vapor presssure, the notation [UT] is
presented after the value.
The ra *ie equilibrium concentration (in atmo-
spher a constituent in air - *ve to its con-
cerv motes/cubic mete water at the
refei nperature. If no reference temperature
was a .* for the constituent's Henry's Law Con-
stant, me notation [UT] Is presented after the value.
The log of the ratio of the equilibrium concentration
of the constituent in octanol relative to its concentra-
tion in water.
The analytical methods presented In the USEPA
publication "Test Methods for Evaluating Sow Waste"
(SW-846), as amended by Updates I and II, that
may be used to determine the concentration of the

consfltuent in ground water. For mil method, an
Estimated QuinataBon Limit (EQL) is given If an EQL
is available. When different EQLs exist for 5 and 25
mL sample sizes, the EQL for the 5 ml sample size is
provided in the Handbook. When the Handbook
presents two Eds for one analytical method, the two
EQLs represent the EQLs obtained using twodifferent
detector types.
The chemical formula drawn to show the relative
arrangements of the atoms. For metals, the Hand-
book provides the chemical symbol.
