BOAT SARM-Manufactured Waste (Non-NPL)

ORD - Edison, NJ
BACKGROUND; This study report on laboratory experiments on low temperature
treatment of soils using thermal desorption. The purpose of the study was
to determine if thermal desorption could remove volatile and semi-volatile
contaminants from a synthetically prepared soil spiked with predetermined
quantities of contaminants. This study supports the U.S. EPAs' program to
demonstrate various technologies for treating contaminated soils for the
purposes of CERCLA/SARA compliance with the proposed 1988 banning of land
disposal of wastes.
OPERATIONAL INFORMATION; The laboratory testing program consisted of 15
separate bench-scale tests. The EPA synthetic soil had two levels of
contaminants which are shown on Table 1. Thermal desorption test were
conducted at three temperatures 150°C, 350°C and 500°C for 30 minutes to
determine the effect of temperature on thermal desorption efficiency. The
surrogate soil or synthetic analytical reference matrix (SARM) is similar
to Superfund site soils and is 30% by volume clay, 25% silt, 20% sand, 20%
topsoil and 5% gravel. The SARMs were air dried to minimize moisture.
Approximately 80 gms of SARM soil were used in the tests in the tray fur-
nace. The tray furnace interior space is approximately 10 cm wide, 14 cm
high and 21 cm deep. A QA/QC plan is contained in the study. Gas bags
were utilized to collect off gas samples from the furnace and THC, CO, CH,
and C«Hc were analyzed by GC. Soils were analyzed for the remaining SARM
constituents using GC/MS.
PERFORMANCE; Thermal desorption of volatile and semi-volatile contaminants
from soils at moderate temperatures can be achieved with reasonable
success. At 550°C most of the volatile constituents are removed to below
the one/ppm level. Acetone appeared to remain in the matrix possibly due

to bound water in the soil. Semivolatile constituents are also removed to
a large extend except for pentachorophenol. Anthracene and phalate are
removed to levels near the detection limit. At 350°C temperature most of
the volatile contaminants are removed down to the 1 ppm level except for
acetone. Semivolatiles are reduced at 350°C, though not significantly.
The author cautions not to place quantitative credence in the results since
the precision of duplicate samples indicated that the data is only useful
 in a qualitative manner.

                                INTRODUCTION

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is evaluating best dem-
onstrated available technology (BOAT) treatment levels for contaminated
Superfund soils and debris for purposes of CERCLA/SARA compliance with the
proposed 1988 Land Ban. The Superfund exemption expires in November 1988.
These BOAT treatability levels are intended to provide the user community
with performance information on five technologies: Incineration*
temperature thermal desorptlon, chemical treatment, physical
ment, and solidification/stabilization. This project deals with the
temperature thermal dtserptlon technology.

PURPOSE AND SCOPE
The purpose of this project was to investigate the capability of a
laboratory-scale low-temperature thermal desorption technology to remove
volatile and semivolatile contaminants from a synthetically-prepared soil
spiked with predetermined quantities of these contaminants.

synthetic soil (supplied by EPA) that has been contaminated with
vol|L|1eSt semivolatiles and metals, at two different levels and at
          thrfF*te.mperatures (150°, 350°, and 550°F) to determine the most

semi volatile compounds using approved EPA methods, to attempt to
develop a material balance for the thermal desorption process.
      5) Analysis of the process residue for 1) volatiles, semivolatiles and
metals and 2) TCLP analysis (through Lee Wan Associates).
      6) preparation of a report summarizing the results of the laboratory
          testing and analysis.

The laboratory testing program consisted of 15 separate bench scale

data was not necessary to achieve the objectives of the project since removals
of volatiles and semi-volatiles from the tray furnace tests was the main
measurement objective.
For the tray furnace the bed of soil that is heated represented the
entire sample. For the tube furnace, all of the off-gas was collected as the
sample, and the remaining soil residue was also collected as a sample.

The first series of 10 tests involved using the tray furnace. The high
and low soil contaminant levels was tested once each at 150° and 350°F (4
tests) and 3 times each at 550CF (6 tests) so that a statistical analysis of
the data would be performed on 550°F tests.
The second series of five tests involved use of the tube furnace to
simulate the generation of off-gas (desorbed volatiles) during thermal treat-
ment. One tube furnace test will be run at 150 and 350°F on the high concen-
tration of soil sample; three tube furnace tests will be run at 550°F also on
a high concentration sample.
TECHNICAL BACKGROUND ON THERMAL DESORPTION
The treatment of contaminated soils at elevated temperatures involves
many different potentially interrelated physical and chemical processes which
may occur simultaneously and/or consecutively. These various processes are
subject to unsteady- state conditions, and the relative significance of these
processes to treatment performance is expected to change during the treatment
period. Appropriate operating conditions to be employed in a thermal treat-
ment system, such as the IT Thermal Desorber can be selected based on an
understanding of these processes and the relationship between operating
conditions and soil characteristics, and corresponding treatment performance.
Much work has been done to describe the interaction between soil and
specific che»1cals and to define the mechanisms through which chemicals
change or migrate within a soil matrix. These mechanisms Include volatiliza-
tion, diffusion and mass flow, and reactions. However, the results and
conclusions from essentially all of this work, whether laboratory or field
studies, have been based on naturally occurring environmental forces at
                                     1-3

ambient conditions. Research findings, such as the correlation between the
organic content of the soil and the apparent affinity of the soil for a
chemical, and theoretical expressions which have been developed describing
the rate of mass flow of a chemical volatilizing through a static soil mass,
have been based on the relative importance of adsorption and diffusion
mechanisms.
Several obvious differences complicate the transfer of such scientific
information to the prediction of the behavior of a chemically contaminated
soil at conditions experienced in the thermal desorber. Most significant are
the physical and chemical changes that can occur as a result of the elevated
temperature. These changes include direct increases in such properties as
vapor pressure, diffusion coefficients, and reaction rate constants, in
addition to potential thermochemical modifications of the soil matrix and
the chemical itself which will drastically affect the interaction between the
chemical and the soil. Secondly, the soil within the desorber is in constant
motion, which minimizes the relative importance of diffusion of the chemical
through the soil matrix. Also, the gas flow passing through the desorber can
promote mass transfer of volatilized materials from the soil to the gas.
Through previous experience, IT has developed a basic understanding of
the dependent variables for the thermal desorption process. The experimental
plan for this project was developed to define these variables within the
intended operating range of concentration, time, and temperature.
THERMAL DESORPTION EQUIPMENT UTILIZED
Two major low-temperature thermal desorption systems have been tested at
the pilot-scale level. One is the IT thermal desorber, which is a rotary
                                     1-4

-------
Indirect-fired calciner that was used as the desorber. The calciner consists
of a 3.3-meter-long by 16-cm internal diameter rotating tube through which
the soil is transferred, and a gas-fired furnace which surrounds the middle 2
meters of the tube length. The other is a thermal screw-type desorption
system developed for the U.S. Army Toxic and Hazardous Materials Agency
(USATHAMA) by Roy F. Weston, Inc. The soil is conveyed from the feed end of
the thermal processor trough by twin screws. An indirect heat transfer fluid
(oil) is circulated through pipes that run the length of the screw conveyor.
The oil is recycled continuously throughout the system.
The above-mentioned units were considered to be too large for the scope
of the present project. Large quantities of synthetic soil would be required
for testing and operational/analytical costs would far exceed the existing
project budget. Therefore, it was decided that a laboratory-scale test would
be the most efficient way to test the effectiveness of low-temperature ther-
mal desorption on the synthetically-spiked soils. Laboratory-scale thermal
desorption units were available from IT Corporation and were chosen for the
analysis because they were 1) of an adequate size in relation to the amount
of synthetic soil available; 2) readily available; and 3) provided the best
combination of efficiency, size, and availability to meet the needs of the
 project.
The remainder of this report is organized as follows: Section 2 -
description of the synthetically-prepared soil used in this project; Sec-
tion 3 - description of the thermal desorption equipment utilized in the
project; Section 4 - summary of the operating log for the thermal desorption
tests; Section 5 - summary of the sampling and analysis plan; Section 6 -

                              WASTE DESCRIPTION

The contaminated soil that was tested during this project was a surro-
gate Superfund soil bearing a wide range of chemical contaminants typically
occurring at Superfund sites. The surrogate soil 1s referred to as SARM, an
acronym for synthetic analytical reference matrix. After considerable re-
search Into the types of soils found at Superfund sites nationwide, Em /
decided on a soil composition of 30 percent by volume clay (a matrix of mont-
morillinite and kaolinite), 25 percent silt, 20 percent sand, 20 percent
topsoil, and 5 percent gravel. These components were air-dried to minimize
moisture and mixed together in batches using a standard truck-mounted cement
mixer.
A prescribed list of chemicals found to be widely and frequently occur-
ring at Superfund sites was then added to the clean SARM in a series of
smaller-scale mixing operations. Organic chemicals added included ethyl ben-
zene, xylene, l,2-d1chloroethane, perch!oroethylene, acetone, chlorobenzene,
styrene, anthracene, pentachlorophenol, and bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate.
Salts or oxides of the following metals were also added: lead, zinc, cad-
mium, arsenic, copper, chromium, and nickel. Because contaminants occur in
soils at a wide range of concentrations, four different SARM formulas con-
taining either high or low levels of organics and metals were prepared for
use in various BOAT tests [soil washing, chemical treatment (KPEG), incinera-
tion, stabilization/fixation, and for this project, thermal desorption].

                                  SECTION 3
DESCRIPTION OF TEST EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURES
The results developed from this study were obtained using a simple and
consistent experimental method and apparatus designed to subject the study
soils to a specified temperature for a specified time. Treatability was
measured by comparing the analyses of the SARM constituents in the untreated
and treated soil. The test equipment and procedures are described in this
section. The features which were incorporated into the test system and
procedures included: 1) sufficient soil quantity to enable analytical sensi-
tivity below 1 ppm and duplicate analysis as necessary, 2) a static but very
thin layer of soil to minimize the potential effects of temperature gradients
and gas phase diffusion (in terms of both release of volatilized materials
and exposure to the purge gas), and 3) quickly achieving and maintaining
steady-state conditions. Considering the time-sensitivity placed on this
project, the equipment and procedures had to be readily available and proven
to be functional and reliable.
THERMAL TREATMENT TEST EQUIPMENT
Tray Furnaca
The principal test equipment was a Lindberg Furnace, Model 51848, with
an electronic temperature controller and 1600-watt heater system. The oven
                                                                      p
is double-shell construction with interior surfaces made of Moldatherm a
molded aluminum-silicate insulation material. This oven 1s capable of oper-
ating up to 1100°C and has a relatively fast heat-up rate due to low mass.
                                     3-1

-------
The interior space is approximately 10 cm wide x 11 cm high x 21 cm deep. A
loose block (1.2 cm thick) of Moldatherm is placed on the bottom of the oven
to provide additional separation between an object placed in the oven and the
hot interior surface of the oven. Incoloy (3/8 inch) tubing was inserted
through the back wall and connected to a nitrogen cylinder to provide a
continuous purge of the interior space during each test. The purge gas was
directed against the back wall to promote preheating and distribution. The
purge gas flowrate, which was measured using a standard rotameter, was main-
tained at approximately 90 cc/minute, equivalent to about 5 percent turnover
per minute. Two extra thermocouples were used to measure temperature. One
of these was an NBS-traceable, Type K, sheathed thermocouple placed approxi-
mately 3 centimeters above the soil surface at the center of the oven. This
was the thermocouple used to measure the "test temperature". The other extra
thermocouple was used for all tests where the temperature within a soil layer
was also measured. Both thermocouples, the temperature indicator, and the
purge gas rotometer were calibrated according to standard engineering prac-
tices. Temperatures were recorded using a Leeds & Northrup Speedomax 2500.
A specially made tray was used to contain the soil within the oven. The
tray which weighed approximately 430 grams, was 9 cm wide x 3.2 cm high x
19.3 cm long and made of Incoloy to resist oxidation at the expected maximum
test temperatures. A separate Incoloy lid was used to cover the tray when
necessary. Figure 3-1 is a schematic drawn to scale of the interior of the
oven with the tray inserted. Figure 3-2 is a photograph of the assembled
test apparatus.
A quartz digital chronometer was used to measure time during each test.

Tube Furnace
The second test apparatus used during the project was a Lindberg Mini
Mite Laboratory tube furnace, Model 55035 with a manual temperature con-
                                                                            p
troller and an 800-watt heater. The furnace is constructed using Moldatherm
ceramic fiber insulation and heating element composite. The chamber size is
1 in. internal diameter x 12 in. long. A built-in thermocouple was used to
control the interior oven temperature to the set point. Thermocouples placed
in the bed were used to develop the time/temperature relationships for the
tests. Figure 4 is a photograph of the assembled test apparatus. Purge gas
which was measured using a standard rotameter was introduced into the 1-in.
outer diameter x 16-in. long quartz tube prior to the heated zone. The purge
gas passed through the bed of soil in the tube, into a water cooled condenser
then to an impinger (containing 0.1 N NaOH solution) followed by a particu-
late filter and two tenax traps in series. Residual gas was then collected
in a Tedlar gas bag. The condensate from the experiment was collected in a
cold finger submerged in an ice bath. Soil bed temperatures were monitored
using a Keithley Model 871 digital temperature indicator for both thermo-
couples. A quartz digital chronometer was used to measure time during each
test. Figure 3-3 provides a schematic of the tube furnace apparatus and
collection system.
For the low (150°F) experiments a larger oven was used since the small
furnace could not be adequately controlled at the low temperature. The oven
is a single-Mil transite oven, Blue M Electric Co., Model SW17TA. It has a
temperature range of 104° to 392°F. Because the bandwidth 1s 14-16°F wide,
it will be controlled manually. The Interior space 1s approximately 43 cm
wide x 46 cm high x 29 cm deep. For this experiment, the furnace was fitted
                                     3-5

-------
with a nitrogen purge system capable of controlling at an equivalent volume
turnover rate as the small furnace. Since the relative volume of nitrogen
delivered to the furnace was quite large, the nitrogen was preheated before
entering the oven. The center of the oven was monitored via an NBS traceable
thermocouple and the soil temperature was also monitored. Temperatures were
recorded using the same L&N Model 2500 recorder as for the small furnace. To
prevent large temperature cycling within the oven, the oven heater control
was manually cycled on for approximately 2 to 3 seconds out of every 10
seconds through the run to keep the variation to within 5°F. It was found
that this type of adjustment prevented the 14°F temperature variation each 2
minutes that occurred with untended operation of the oven.
STANDARD THERMAL TREATMENT TRAY TEST PROCEDURE
A single procedure was established for all thermal treatment tray tests
except for several special tests described separately below.
The standard procedure consisted of the following steps:
     1. Define and record planned experiment in the data book (i.e. time,
          temperature, soil, etc.).
     2. Weigh the empty, clean tray.
     3. Transfer a representative aliquot (approximately 80 grams) of
prepared soil from the jar to the tray using a stainless steel or
          PVC scupula.
     4. Weigh the soil and tray and adjust the soil quantity to achieve
          approximately 80 grams.
     5. Distribute and level the soil within the tray to approximately
          2.5 mn depth.
     6. Turn on the purge gas flow on to the proper setting on the rota-
          meters.
     7. Place the tray with soil in the oven at ambient temperature and
          close the oven door.
                                    3-6

-------
     8. Set the oven temperature controller set-point to the target test
          temperature and start the timer.

     9. Monitor and record the temperatures and time periodically through-
          out the test period.

    10. When the prescribed residence time at the target temperature is
reached, shut off the oven heater and purge gas flow and open the
          oven door.

    11. Cautiously withdraw the hot tray and soil using special tongs,
place a cover on the tray, and place the covered tray in a separate
hood for cooling for approximately 1 hour.

    12. Close the oven door and set the temperature at 1000°C for approxi-
mately one hour. This step was prescribed in the QA/QC plan to
ensure no residual materials from the sample would remain in the
          oven.

    13. Weigh the tray (without cover) plus treated soil.

    14. Transfer an aliquot (typically about 10 grams) of treated soil fcom
the tray to a tared, 60-cc, wide-mouth, amber bottle with Teflon -
lined cap. Code, label, and submit this aliquot for PCB analysis.
Transfer the remainder of the treated soil to an identical type
bottle, label and store as a retainer.

    15. Clean the tray, cover, and nondisposable implements using the
          following procedure:

0 Rinse with acetone and wipe clean
0 Scrub with detergent (Alconox ) solution and rinse with hot
tap water followed by distilled water
0 Rinse with acetone and allow to dry
0 Rinse three times with methylene chloride (e.g., approximately
15 to 25 ml each rinse for the tray)
          0 Air dry and store.

STANDARD PROCEDURE FOR TUBE FURNACE TESTS

     1) Define and record planned experiment in the data book (i.e. time,
          t«ptrature, soil, etc.).

     2) Weigh the empty; clean tube with glass wool and stopper in place.

     3) Transfer a representative aliquot (approximately 100 grams) of
prepared soil from the jar to the tube using a stainless steel or
          PVC scupula.

     4) Weigh the soil and tube and adjust the soil quantity to achieve
          approximately 100 grams.

                                    3-7

-------
 5) Place the tube in the furnace and connect the off-gas condensing,
filter impinger, filter, trap system, and turn on the cooling
      water.
 6) Turn the purge gas flow to the proper setting on the rotometer.
 7) Close the oven, and set the heater at the proper power setting.
 8) Monitor and record the temperature and time periodically through
      the test period.
9} When the prescribed residence time at the target temperature is
reached turn off the power and lower the oven away from the tube.
10) Allow the tube to cool then shut off the purge.
11} Separate the tube from the gas train and weigh the tube and the
      treated soil.
12) Record the volume of the condensate phases and weigh.
13) Transfer an aliquot (approximately 10 g) of treated soil from the
tube to a 60-cc wide-mouth bottle. Code and submit for analysis.
      Store remaining sample.
14) Clean apparatus as prescribed for tray tests.
                               3-8

                         SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS PLAN

SAMPLING POINT DESCRIPTIONS
Tray Test Runs
The lab scale miniature muffle furnace was operated according to the
                            1 2
descriptions in the QA plan. The large sample aliquot was removed from
the storage refrigerator and a small aliquot was transferred to the tared
tray. The soil was leveled as much as possible using a stainless steel
spatula and then rewelghed. This weight was recorded 1n the notebook as the
wet sample weight. The tray with the wet soil was then transferred to the
oven (previously cooled to ambient temperature) and heating started as soon
as the oven door was closed.
Time at temperature was taken from the point that the internal oven
temperature monitor indicated the desired operating temperature.
At the end of the time at temperature, the tray was removed from the
oven with a pair of tongs, covered with a I1d, and allowed to cool to ambient
temperature in a separate hood.
After cooling, the tray with the treated sample was reweighed, and an
aliquot of tht treated soil was transferred to a 60-cc wide-mouth amber jar,
                    D
capped with a Teflon -lined lid and kept refrigerated until delivery for
analysis.
The remainder of the unanalyzed sample was transferred to a separate
                                                o
60-cc wide-mouth amber jar, capped with a Teflon -lined lid, and stored in a
refrigerator.
                                     5-1

The tray and all associated tools were then cleaned according to the
techniques prescribed in the QA plan.
 Tube Furnace Test Sampling
The downstream portion of the tube furnace system was assembled, as
follows, before soil was added to the tube.
                       D
The cleaned Tedlar gas bags were first evacuated, clamped shut, and
attached to the exhaust gas manifold.
The cooling water lines were attached to the cleaned condenser and it
was positioned for attachment to the tube furnace. The condensate receiver
was attached to the condenser and the cleaned bubbler was filled with 200 ml
of fresh 0.1N NaOH and attached to the condenser system. The preweighed
clean paper filter was placed in the cleaned filter holder and the filter
holder was attached to the outlet of the bubbler.
At this time the new Tenax, and Tenax plus charcoal tube pairs were
removed from their packages, unsealed, and connected to the outlet of the
filter holder and then to the gas bag manifold. In this way, the Tenax traps
were isolated from the atmosphere by the water seal on the scrubber and the
pinch clamps on the gas bag manifold until the purge gas was started in the
 tube run.
After the gas collection system was assembled the clean quartz tube was
tared. The large soil aliquot was then removed from the refrigerator and a
portion transferred to the quartz desorption tube using a stainless spatula.
The tube plus wet soil was weighed and then attached to the remainder of the
desorption system and the assembly completed by raising the cold furnace into
position and clamping it around the glass tube. The heating tape was wrapped
from the exhaust end of the furnace to the front edge of the condenser and
                                     5-2

-------
the ice bath placed around the condensate receiver. After completing the
assembly the system was inspected to make sure it was ready to begin heating.
The heating tape was turned on and allowed to reach 100°C before starting the
furnace and the purge gas. As when the furnace was turned on and the purge
gas started, temperature recording began and one of the gas bags was opened
to the system. When the soil temperature, (measured by a thermocouple posi-
tioned in the soil in the center of the furnace) reached the desired oper-
ating temperature, the time at temperature was started. That temperature was
held as closely as possible for 30 minutes. At the start of the 30-minute
period, the first gas bag was clamped shut and a second gas bag was opened to
the system for 15 minutes. A third gas bag was opened to the system for the
final 15 minutes of the run.
At the end of the 30-minute period, the furnace was turned off, the
purge gas was shut off, the gas bag manifold was clamped shjt, and the fur-
nace was lowered away from the quartz tube to allow the tube to cool to
 ambient temperature.
The Tenax traps were removed from their position on the collection
system, recapped with their initial plugs, and repackaged in their capped,
glass shipping tubes. The tube pair was then labeled, sealed in a labeled
ziploc bag, and refrigerated until delivery for analysis.
The scrubber bubbler solution was transferred to a 250-ml amber bottle,
                    p
capped with1» Teflon -lined I1d, labeled, and refrigerated.
The paper filter was removed from the filter holder and equilibrated in
a dessicator for 30 minutes. The filter holder was rinsed with approximately
30 to 40 ml of methylene chloride into a 60-cc wide-mouth amber bottle. The
paper filter was weighed after equilibration, added to the jar with the
                                            p
rinses, and the jar was capped with a Teflon -lined I1d and refrigerated.
                                     5-3

-------
The condensate receiver was then removed and the volumes of any distinct
phases were recorded. The liquid was then transferred to a 60-cc wide-mouth
                               p
amber jar, capped with a Teflon -lined lid, labeled, and refrigerated.
The condensate receiver was reattached to the condenser and the con-
denser was removed from the quartz tube. A mixture of 30 ml of HLO plus 30
ml of methylene chloride was then poured into the condenser and the condenser
capped. The condenser was inverted several times to dissolve the crystalline
solids that had collected in the upper portion of the condenser. When the
solid had dissolved the liquid was transferred to another 60-cc wide-mouth
                                             p
amber jar which was then capped with a Teflon -lined lid, labeled, and re-
frigerated. ,
The quartz tube with the treated soil was then removed from the system
and weighed. An aliquot of the treated soil was removed with a clean stain-
less spatula into a 60-cc wide-mouth amber jar which was then capped with a
      p
Teflon -lined lid, labeled, and refrigerated.
The remainder of the treated soil was transferred to a second 60-cc
                                    p
wide-mouth jar, capped with a Teflon -lined lid, labeled, and refrigerated.
The entire glassware portion of the collection system and the quartz
tube were then cleaned as prescribed in the QA plan.
When the samples were ready to be delivered for analysis, the aqueous
condensate, the condenser rinse, and the scrubber solutions were composited
                                             p
into a 500-a) amber jar, capped with a Teflon -lined lid, and relabeled using
the standard notebook number, page number, sample number, and logbook number
coding system (I.e. No. 555-70-1R-5416). This numbering system was used for
all samples delivered to an external analytical lab and referenced on the
sample analysis request sheet and the chain of custody forms delivered with
                                     5-4

-------
the samples. The samples were hand delivered in an insulated cooler with ice
to keep the samples cold and to minimize volatile losses.
The gas bag samples were immediately analyzed or analyzed the next day
for total hydrocarbons as methane, and for carbon monoxide, methane, and
ethane.
DESIGN AND OPERATING DATA COLLECTION
During the tray desorption runs the temperature of the soil in the tray
and the temperature in the center of the oven just above the top of the tray
were recorded using an L&N Speedomax 2500 recorder using a range of 0° to
600°F. Any changes in the set points of the oven during the run were noted
on the chart paper or in the notebook during the run. Pertinent observations
before the run, during the run, and at the completion of the run were record-
ed in the notebook. Sample weights before the run and at the completion of
the run were recorded in the notebook.
During the tube furnace desorption runs, the temperature of the soil in
the center of the oven and the temperature of the glass outlet in front of
the condenser were recorded continually using an L&N Speedomax 2500 recorder
using a range of 0° to 600°F. Sample weights of the soil before and after
treatment were recorded in the notebook. Purge gas type and rotometer read-
ings were taken at the beginning of the run. Any unusual fluctuations of the
flow or the pressure at the front of the tube were also recorded in the note-
book. Liquid volumes used in the scrubber and weights of the paper filters
used were also recorded. Tenax trap pair numbers were also recorded in the
notebook for reference. At the end of the run, discrete samples produced
during the run, such as condensate, scrubber, traps, soil, filter, and rinses
                                     5-5

-------
were separately bottled and labeled. When appropriate, volumes of discrete
condensate phases produced were also recorded in the notebook.
SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
Since the contaminants present in the sample soil were at times both
toxic and volatile, sample handling where possible was done in a properly
vented fume hood. All experiments were done with the apparatus inside a
properly vented fume hood.
Care was taken to prevent escape of flammable volatiles into the labora-
tory atmosphere or near working electrical components by careful positioning
of auxilary equipment. Nitrogen gas was used as a purge to maintain a non-
flammable atmosphere above the soil.
When working with the starting soil or with treated soil or its con-
densed off gas components, the operator suitable wore gloves to prevent skin
contact with any contaminants.
DEVIATIONS FROM SAMPLING AND ANALYSES PLAN
During the lowest operating temperature experiments a different oven was
used to heat the tray samples. The oven was a Blue M Model SW 17TA single-
wall transit oven.
The oven was modified to allow introduction of the nitrogen purge gas at
the rear of the oven. Due to the large interior volume of the oven (approxi-
mately 57 lltars) the purge gas was preheated near the Intended operating
temperature to prevent overcooling of the oven by the volume of purge gas
necessary to obtain an equivalent gas exchange rate to the small furnace.
The actual gas flow rate was 2.8 Uters/min.
                                     5-6

-------
Since the oven used a very simple controller, the oven heat was cycled
on manually for approximately 2 seconds out of every 10 seconds during the
run. This manual adjustment kept the temperature bandwidth of the oven to
within 5°F, whereas the natural bandwidth of the oven was approximately 14°
to 16°F with a cycle time of 2 minutes.
For the analysis of the Tenax and Tenax plus charcoal traps for vola-
tiles, the traps when received were spiked with 50 ug of surrogate standards
and then emptied into 20 ml of Methanol. The mixture was sonicated and 50 ul
of each trap solution was added to reagent water to make 5.0 ml of purging
solution. (Total extracts vol » 100 ul in 5 ml of water). This solution was
then analyzed by purge and trap GC/MS.
Recovery of the surrogates was within an acceptable 30 to 100 penient
range and the resultant analyses, corrected for dilution, represent the total
recovered micrograms of contaminant per trap pairs.
                                     5-7

-------
In some cases, to obtain a 'reasonable' dry weight basis the percent
moisture given should be ignored (as in PEI-17, and PEI-8) and in other cases
corrected to the near starting value as in PEI-21. In the former case it
appears that an aliquot with an excessive amount of moisture was used for the
determination and thus moisture content should be corrected to a value more
consistent with the remainder of the observations.
The tube furnace condensate analyses are not presented here, because the
mass balance was poor on all of these runs, especially for the 550°F temp-
erature and these data were not the central objective of the project. The
most likely explanation for the poor mass balance is that the volatile com-
ponents were extracted into the methylene chloride rinse phase and were
subsequently lost when the methylene chloride was phase separated and concen-
trated for analyses of the semi-volatiles. Since the gas bag analyses did
not show unusally high hydrocarbon values, the volatiles did not pass by the
traps, even through the traps may have been saturated.
Another possibility is that the extraction of components from the traps
using methanol may not have been as efficient for some of the less volatile
constituents.

                                  SECTION 7
                    QUALITY ASSURANCE AND QUALITY CONTROL
The data in Tables 7-1 and 7-2 indicate the precision of duplicate
analyses and the recovery of contaminants freshly spiked onto a sample of
clean SARM soil in the laboratory. The presence of significant levels of
some of the metal contaminants makes the interpretation of the metal spike
recoveries difficult. The level of the recoveries of the semi-volatile
contaminants and the apparent precision of duplicate sample analyses imply
that the data is useful only in a qualitative predictive manner and that
quantitative interpretation should not be attempted.

                                   SECTION 8
                         DATA SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS

Thermal desorption of volatile and semi-volatile contaminants from soils
at mode rate temperatures such as 550°F can be achieved with reasonable
success. Most of the volatile constituents are removed to well below 1 ppm
residual concentration on the treated soil. Acetone appears to remain in the
soil matrix, perhaps due to the presence of bound water in the soil.
s Semi-volatile contaminants are removed to a large extent except for
pentachlorophenol, perhaps due to its ability to form stable phenates. The
anthracene and phthalate are apparently removed at least to levels near the
 method detection levels.
At a temperature of 350°F most of the volatiles with the exception of
acetone are reduced to levels below 1 ppm residual concentration on the
treated soil. The semi-volatile contaminants are reduced, though not to any
moderate treatment criterion that might be desired.
Due to the volatility of the contaminants and the apparent non-homo-
geneity of the starting soil, the data are apparently non reproducible. The
starting soil was very moist and sticky and had large pebbles throughout the
material. Unless a great deal of care went into the removal of aliquots from
the soil for the various analyses, it 1s extremely likely that a sample with
excessive moisture or a pebble could be obtained. This would result in
extreme variations in the concentrations of components between samples. The
data on the starting soils indicate that the contaminants themselves were not
uniformly mixed into the soil matrix, especially for the semi-volatiles components,

 ANALYSIS OF FEZ SOIL SAMPLES
Please call Arie Groen for instructions before analyzing samples.
Please analyze the soil for all compounds on attached list. The
condensate-scrubber-rinse samples are to be analyzed for volatiles
and semi-volatiles on attached list. Paper filter and rinse
samples are to be analyzed for semi-volatiles only. Tenax traps
and Tenax with carbon traps are to be extracted in methanol and
each pair combined as a composite. The composites probably need
to be diluted, especially 555-53, 555-56, 555-63. Traps need to
be extracted before 9/1/87. Return traps, fittings, and extracted
sorbent to the TD Lab.
