                                FOREWORD

The importance of collecting and making available the information

pertaining to solid-waste-related research, demonstration projects, and

other activities was emphasized by the specific authorization contained

in Section 204(b) of the Solid Waste Disposal Act, Public Law 89-272.

The present booklet lists publications that have been collected or

published by the Bureau in response to this directive.
                                    --RICHARD D. VAUGHAN, Director

                              INTRODUCTION

The publications available from the Bureau of Solid Waste Management

are from various sources. There are Bureau publications reporting on

results of the research, development, and demonstrations in progress as

authorized by the Solid Waste Disposal Act of 19&5. This far-reaching

Federal grants and contracts program has generated solid-waste-related

research in many fields. The reports from the grantees and contractors

are being published by the Bureau as soon as available. Results of

intramural research and technical investigations conducted by members

of the Bureau staff are printed by the Bureau or submitted to professional

journals so that the reports will reach the largest possible audience.

In the latter case, reprints are frequently purchased and distributed

by the Bureau. Certain conference proceedings, findings of various

commissions and study groups, and other collateral literature are also

ava ilable.

For convenience in ordering and to expedite distribution, each pub-

lication has been assigned a permanent number. Those that are followed

by (l) are held in limited quantities and available only as supplies

permi t.

In gathering together and making available this body of information

on solid waste management, the Bureau hopes to assist those engaged in

-------
the task of finding ways to manage the Nation's burden of solid wastes.

We hope, too, that by indicating the breadth of the solid waste manage-

ment field, additional professionals may be attracted into the field—as

investigators, as engineers, as managers—wherever their talent fits.

And finally, we hope that the American citizen will see in the publica-

tions available, the significant progress made in response to the solid-

waste-related legislation enacted by the Congress.
