&ER& Project Summary

                    1984 Bibliography of
                    Small Wastewater Flows
Stephen P. Dix andTrina L Karolchik
                      The USEPA National Small Flows
                    Clearinghouse maintains a computer
                    database that contains abstracts and
indexes of domestic and foreign litera-
ture dealing with innovative and alterna-
                    tive wastewater treatment systems for
                    small communities, the sparsely popu-
lated areas of larger communities, and
                    individual onsite systems. Both techni-
cal and nontechnical reports and in-
                    formation are aincluded.
                      The database contains information
that is applicable to: septic tanks and
                    subsurface disposal systems; other
                    onsite systems, including dual systems;
small systems serving clusters of house-
holds or commercial users, each user
with average annual dry weather flows
of under 25,000 gallons per day; 6-inch
                    and smaller gravity sewers carrying
partially or fully treated wastewater or
carrying raw wastewater as part of
                    limited conveyance systems that serve
clusters of households and small com-
                    mercial establishments; pressure and
                    vacuum sewers; and other treatment
                    and conveyance works that employ
                    alternative technologies and that serve
sparsely populated areas of larger com-
                    munities.
                      This new, second bibliographic vol-
ume supplements the first volume, the
                    1979 Bibliography of Small Wastewater
Flows. The 1984 volume contains infor-
mation abstracts that have been added
to the Clearinghouse database since the
                    publication of the 1979 Bibliography.
The indexes in this volume catalog the
information contained in both the 1979
and 1984 documents and can therefore
be used to search both for the pertinent
entries. The first 631 entries are how-
ever, included only in the first volume.
The database may also be searched by
                    computer using descriptor words, taxo-
nomic designations, states' names,
and/or authors' names. People inter-
ested in having the database searched
for them can call the Clearinghouse at
its toll-free number (800) 624-8301.
  This Project Summary was developed
by EPA's Water Engineering Research
Laboratory, Cincinnati, OH, to announce
key findings of the research project that
is fully documented in a separate report
of the same title (see Project Report
ordering information at back).
