Project Summary
English-Russian, Russian-English
Glossary of Coal Cleaning Terms
J. Pekar
This English-Russian, Russian-English
glossary of coal cleaning terms was
compiled as a joint U.S./Soviet effort
within the framework of the U.S./
U.S.S.R. Working Group on Stationary
Source Air Pollution Control Tech-
nology, under the U.S./U.S.S.R. Agree-
ment of Cooperation in the Field of
Environmental Protection. The need for
the glossary developed because of the
growing number of language-specific
terms that arose during information ex-
changes within the Working Group.
This Project Summary was developed
by EPA's Air and Energy Engineering
Research Laboratory, Research Triangle
Park, NC, to announce the availability of
the glossary (see ordering Information
at back).
The glossary of coal cleaning terms is
organized in two independent, but co-
ordinated, sections: Part I is the English-
Russian section and Part II is the Russian-
English section. Each section has its own
pagination and sequential entry number-
ing system. In addition, each entry has a
number following its other-language
equivalent which refers to its entry
number in the corresponding section. This
makes it possible to cross-check entries
in the two sections and obtain the Russian
and English equivalents for separate parts
of the entry.
The entry numbers and separate pagi-
nation of each section facilitate future
entry addition, deletion, and revision.
Abbreviations were kept to a minimum
and, where used, are standard, except for
the origin of entry (United States — US or
CWA, or Soviet Union — SU or CCCP).
Definitions were obtained from both
countries and the entry origin is marked.
Where the headword equivalents carried
different concepts in the two languages.
two separate glosses are given. In most
cases the U.S. and Soviet glosses are
equivalent and both entry origins are
indicated.
In compiling the glossary, Soviet entries
were incorporated without exception. The
U.S. entries were included only if they
were not readily available in existing
Russian-English technical dictionaries, or
if it was felt that a gloss would aid the
translator in a choice of terms.
The glossary should enhance the
understanding of each country's coal
cleaning literature as it applies to en-
vironmental protection.
