4>EPA Project Summary
Developments at Thirteenth
International Conference on
Water Pollution Research
F. Michael Saunders, Thomas M. Keinath, Richard A. Conway,
and Carl A. Brunner
This report provides a mechanism
whereby current water research devel-
opments from around the world, as
reported at the 13th International Con-
ference on Water Pollution Research of
the International Association on Water
Pollution Research and Control, can be
highlighted and brought to the attention
of other water pollution researchers. In
the report are reviews of the conference
presentations and invited discussion,
poster sessions, and pre- and post-
conference seminars, as well as inter-
pretive analyses of informal develop-
ments associated with the Conference
that were judged to be of particular
relevance to water quality control
activities in the U.S.A. Also included is
a section on research needs.
This Project Summary was developed
by EPA's Water Engineering Research
Laboratory, Cincinnati, Ohio, to an-
nounce key findings of the research
project that Is fully documented 'In a
separate report of the same title (see
Project Report ordering Information at
back).
Introduction
The International Association on Water
Pollution Research and Control (IAWPRC)
has sponsored biennial conferences since
the first was held in London in 1962.
These conferences provide a forum where
international researchers and practition-
ers can meet, present technical papers,
discuss these presentations, and debate
cutting-edge technical issues concerning
water quality. Such conferences are an
excellent opportunity for the U.S. Environ-
mental Protection Agency (EPA) to learn
of the latest developments in the inter-
national arena and to identify research
needs.
The 13th International Conference on
Water Pollution Research was held in Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil, on August 17-21,1986.
This report summarizes the formal and
informal developments that evolved dur-
ing this conference and the pre- and
post-conference seminars. The document
was prepared for the EPA by the United
States of America National Committee
(USANC) for Representation of the United
States to IAWPRC.
Rather than include complete confer-
ence papers with formal and informal
floor discussion, many of which are pub-
lished in Water Science & Technology,
the full report includes summary pre-
sentations as prepared by official U.S.A.
participants in the conference. Specific
emphasis was placed on scientific and
technical developments of special interest
to U.S.A. researchers and practitioners,
as well as research needs identified in or
associated with conference presentations.
Basic themes for this conference included
ground water pollution, surface water
quality problems, river basin manage-
ment, wastewater treatment and disposal,
sludge treatment and disposal, marine
disposal of wastewaters, and health
aspects of water microbiology and
virology.
Scientific and Technical
Developments
Technical areas included in the report
are as follows:
• Stabilization Ponds and Natural
Systems
-------
Land Application of Wastewaters
Aerobic Biological Treatment and
Biofilms
Anaerobic Biological Treatment
Biological Nutrient Removal
Water Microbiology and Virology
Physicochemical Treatment
Water Quality
Marine Disposal
General Topics
Research Needs Identified
A total of 66 research needs were
identified by USANC as a result of at-
tendance at the Conference and associ-
ated seminars — 38 dealt with biological
treatment systems, 14 with water micro-
biology and virology, 7 with physico-
chemical treatment, and 7 with other
topics.
The full report was submitted in ful-
fillment of Cooperative Agreement
CR812729-01-0 by the United States of
America National Committee for Repre-
sentation of the United States to the
International Association on Water Pol-
lution Research and Control under the
sponsorship of the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency.
F. Michael Saunders, Thomas M. Keinath, and Richard A. Conway are with
