Project Summary
Coal and the Environment
Abstract Series: Bibliography
on Disposal of Mine and
Cleaning Plant Refuse
V. E. Gleason
This Project Summary describes the
fifth volume to appear in the "Coal.
and the Environment Abstract
Series," an updated edition of the
"Bibliography on Disposal of Mine
and Clean Plant Refuse." Other
volumes in the series are "Reclama-
tion of Coal Mined Land" and "Mine
Drainage Bibliography." The three
bibliographies in the series are in-
tended to complement one another.
While each covers particular subject
areas, inevitably some documents
listed in one are also relevant to one of
the other bibliographies. In addition to
the abstracts, this volume includes an
Author Index and a General Index.
This Project Summary was develop-
ed by EPA's Industrie/ Environmental
Research Laboratory. Cincinnati. OH,
to announce key findings of the
research project which is fully docu-
mented in a separate report of the
same title (see Project Report ordering
information at back).
As coal continues to be produced and
as mines are opened in areas where
mining has not existed previously,
opportunities for the occurrence of
environmental degradation will in-
crease. However, such degradation may
be mitigated if existing and evolving
pollution control technology is well
known and properly applied.
Numerous public and private efforts
have contributed to the mass of know-
ledge concerning coal's environmental
problems and to their control. This
knowledge is well documented, and the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) has been actively involved in com-
piling and disseminating it. One facet of
this activity has been the co-sponsor-
ship of a comprehensive coal-environ-
ment library at Bituminous Coal
Research, Inc., (BCR) for use by the
public as well as the coal industry, and
the publication of bibliographies of
abstracts based on the collections with-
in the library.
This Bibliography on Disposal of Mine
and Cleaning Plant Refuse is the fifth to
appear in the "Coal and the Environ-
ment Abstract Series." It contains
almost 300 newly listed references,
plus all references and abstracts found
in the initial coal-refuse disposal bibli-
ography published in 1978, a total of
nearly 800 references. Preparation of
this edition was co-sponsored by EPA,
Department of Interior's Office of Sur-
face Mine Reclamation and Enforce-
ment (OSM), and BCR.
The other volumes in the series are
"Bibliography on Mined-Land Reclama-
tion," "Mine Drainage Bibliography
1910-1976," and "Mine Drainage
Bibliography 1929-1980." The first
bibliography in the series, "Mine Drain-
age Abstracts 1 91 0-1 976," based on an
information project carried out by BCR
since 1961, was prepared in 1976 by
o US GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE. 1«1 -757-012/7385
-------
BCR with the co-sponsorship of the
Pennsylvania Department of Environ-
mental Resources and EPA. Copies of
that bibliography may be obtained by
requesting it by name from BCR or by
number PB 265 041/4BE from the
National Technical Information Service
(NTIS), prepaid. "Mine Drainage Bibli-
ography 1929-1980," EPA-600/7-80-
113, which updates the earlier volume,
is also available from BCR by name and
from NTIS, prepaid, by number PB 80-
221 062. The Reclamation Bibliog-
raphy, EPA-600/7-79-102, can be
obtained from BCR and from NTIS as
PB 298 191/8WP, prepaid.
The subjects covered in the Refuse
Bibliography include the analysis and
characterization of coal refuse; various
methods of handling, storing, and dis-
posing of coal refuse; environmental
problems such as refuse drainage
quality and combustion of refuse piles;
the control of environmental pr&blems;
uses for refuse; and reclamation of
refuse disposal areas. The coal cleaning
process itself is very closely related to
the general subject area covered in this
bibliography. However, publications on
coal cleaning have not been included
unless they contained information that
contributed significantly to the knowl-
edge and understanding of coal refuse
and its related disposal problems.
In addition to the abstracts, the
Refuse Bibliography includes an Author
Index and General Index. The
Appendices provide lists of the publica-
tions most recently acquired for the
other volumes of "Coal and the Environ-
ment Abstract Series." Appendix A
continues the update for "Bibliography
on Mined-Land Reclamation" which
was begun in a previous volume in this
Series. Appendix B gives an update for
that previous volume, "Mine Drainage
Bibliography 1929-1980"
