The impacts of oil and oil-contami-
nated sediments on submerged vegeta-
tion are largely unknown. Oil may coat
plants, blocking nutrient assimilation
and gas exchange. The relatively low
incidence of oil pollution in Chesapeake
Bay would suggest that it is not a major
factor in the recent demise of the
submerged grasses, however, more
information is necessary about the bio-
logical impact of petrochemicals in an
estuarine environment.
