I.    PURPOSE






      The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, and




the Soil Conservation Service have the primary responsibility for




developing a comprehensive water use plan for the Susquohenna River




Basin.  Part of the tentative plan of development consists of a




series of headwater reservoirs for flood protection and other




beneficial uses.




      Prior to the formulation of detailed project plans for these




reservoirs, the Federal Water Quality Administration was requested




to determine existing water quality of streams to be impounded.  The




data contained in this report represent the results of these pre-




impoundment water quality investigations.






II.   SCOPE






      A total of 173 potential reservoir sites were sampled, of




which 148 sites were SCS proposals and 25 were Corps of Engineer sites,

Owing to the large number of sampling stations most stations were




only sampled once.




      Inasmuch as most of the sites were located in coal mining




regions, most of the analysis activity focused on the Mine drainage




parameters including pH, specific conductance, net alkalinity, total




iron, sulfate, manganese, aluminum, calcium, magnesium and hardness.




In addition to these parameters,  flow volumes ware measured at the




time of sampling at each station and collform bacteria sampled in




streams suspected to be polluted with organic vastes.






III.  PROCEDURES






      Samples were collected and analyzed following procedures out-




lined ia the publication, '"Standard Methods of Water and Wasitewatar




Examination," American Public Health Association, 12th edition, 196%




      Sample site locations are shown In Figures  1 through 1Q. Tablets




i through U detail chemical parameters at; each site and list possible




problem locations.
