The attached tabulations are to be used to facilitate the estab-
lishment of River Mile Indexes for points of interest without the need for
joining together a number of the indexing maps. In other words^ to estab-
lish the complete index number could require following a stream across
several sheets to its confluence with the base river to obtain confluence
indexes and mileages The tabulations contain mileages,, levels,, an5. Indexes
for streams in the Susquehanna River Basin,, and were prepared to eliminate
most of the problems of transferring from map to map.
Before attempting to utilize the system,it must be noted that the
index numbers found on the maps are preceded by a single digit prefix. This
prefix indicates the level of stream. The numbers in parenthesis appearing
after or "below the indexes indicate miles to mouth of stream.
The following example illustrates the use of the tabulations and
the River Mile Indexing System. To index a fictitious bridge crossing,
Clover Creek of the Frankstovm Branch of the Juniata River} the following
sequence is used.
Example:
1. River System - 0212001 - Identifies Susquehanna River Basin.
2. Miles on, Base River - 84.50 - Identifies miles up Susquehanna
to confluence with Juniata River.
3, Second Level Index - 001450 - Identifies index of Susquehanna -
Juniata confluence.
4. Second Level Miles - 101.60 - Identifies miles up Juniata to
confluence with Frankstown Branch.
5. Third Level Index - 02010 - Identifies index of Juniata - Frankstown
Branch confluence.
6. Third Level Miles - 15.80 - Identifies miles up Frankstown Branch
to confluence with Clover Creek.
7. Fourth Level Index - 0250 - Identifies index of Frankstown Branch -
Clover Creek confluence,
8, Fourth Level Miles - 3.10 - Identifies miles up Clover Creek to
the bridge, as measured from the index map.
The resulting index is shown below on an IBM card. This type of card
is utilized for computer retrieval of information concerning this point as
presented in "A River Mile Indexing System for Computer Applications in
Storing and Retrieving Data".
