International Update is a new EPA Headquarters Library bulletin for EPA staff interested
in international environmental information. It will be published monthly to highlight special
information services. We have recently expanded support for international initiatives, and this
bulletin will keep you current with the services and products targeted specifically to your
critical activities.
• The International Collection: books and journals on international topics.
• Legislative Tracking and Briefings: action updates of key legislation on
international environmental topics, along with background and voting records of
committee members.
• Reference: response to international queries, custom bibliographies, research
guides, and database searches.
The INFOTERRA Staff looks forward to working with you:
• John Butsch, Head INFOTERRA Librarian. John, new to our staff, has
experience as a librarian at US Agency for International Development and World Bank.
• Mary Stevanus, INFOTERRA Reference Librarian. Mary worked as a general
reference librarian at EPA before moving to INFOTERRA. She has developed a real
expertise with legislative databases and has a keen sense of where to find the
environmental data.
• Keith Chanon, INFOTERRA Technician. Keith comes to us from American
University with a degree in International Studies. He has studied at the University of
Moscow and travelled extensively in Eastern Europe.

International Symposium on Ecological
Indicators. October 16-19,1990. Miami Beach,
FL Sponsored by the US EPA, this forum will
focus on the identification, application, and
monitoring of ecological indicators which
describe the status of aquatic, desert, wetland,

Update
USSR /Eastern Europe
— Keith Chanon
Activities for Earth Day were scheduled
throughout Eastern Europe. The Bulgarian
Academy of Sciences and the Institute for
Ecology on Environmental Matters sponsored
tree plantings, concerts, and lectures on
environmental topics. In Czechoslovakia
grass-roots organizations including
Brontosaurus and the Czech Union for Nature
Conservation organized programs, including a
reforestation project. Concerts also took place
in Bohemia and Moravia where musicians, along
with artists, writers, and politicians supported
environmental reforms.
Hungarian radio and television broadcast
programs on national environmental issues and
the World Federation of Democratic Youth
initiated the World Youth Rainforest Action
campaign. The Polish Ecological Club
organized a campaign to clean up the Vistula
River and areas around the Baltic Sea.
In the USSR, the Foundation for Social
Innovations coordinated rallies that focused on
preventing further damage to rivers and lakes.
The Lithuanian Greens also began a project to
save the Volga River and Althay region.
