                                 YOUR INTERNATIONAL CONNECTION  !
          The International Update is a monthly EPA Headquarters
          Library bulletin for EPA staff interested in international
          environmental information.  It is produced by the
          INFOTERRA staff to highlight special  information
          services. The Update is designed to keep you current
          with information services, sources, and products targeted
          specifically to your critical international activities.

          Following is a brief overview of the types of features that
          you will find in future issues of the International Update.

                 Data Bases and Bulletin Boards: electronic
          forms of information storage and retrieval available
          through INFOTERRA are highlighted, particularly those
          with international applications.

                  Conferences  and Meetings:   notices of
          upcoming international environmental conferences and
          meetings are listed, including information on how to
          register.

                 Journal Articles: highly relevant articles from
          current environmental periodicals are listed.

                 The International Collection:  recent additions
          to the collection are highlighted, including brief abstracts
          of the items.
                                                              Non-EPA Sources of Information: the work
                                                        of other U.S. government agencies and international
                                                        organizations that are  involved with international
                                                        environmental issues are described.

                                                              Current Events: available information sources
                                                        concerning major world events are included.

                                                              Special Services: special information products
                                                        provided by the INFOTERRA staff are highlighted, such
                                                        as the legislative tracking and briefings service.

                                                        The International Update was started nearly a year ago
                                                        and has since proven to be an excellent medium for the
                                                        exchange of international environmental  information
                                                        within the Agency.  We  have recently expanded our
                                                        distribution of the Update to include the increasing
                                                        number of  individuals  and offices  working with
                                                        international issues.

                                                        If  you have been receiving our newsletter from the
                                                        beginning, we hope that you will continue to find it
                                                        informative. To those who are new to our mailing list, we
                                                        welcome you. If you would like to receive back issues
                                                        of the International  Update,  please contact the

The following journals, located in the Headquarters Library, contain information
on international environmental  issues focusing  on scientific, economic.
political and public advocacy perspectives.
                           Environment
                        (Heldref Publications)
Features in-depth articles covering the political, economic, and social aspects
of environmental protection.  It regularly discusses global environmental
policies and regional strategies to promote environmental awareness.

       Environmental and Energy Study Institute Weekly Bulletin
                          (U.S. Congress)
Congressional activity in the energy and natural resources fields is analyzed
in this biweekly newsletter. Major provisions of pending legislation in the
House  and Senate are detailed.

                  Industry and Environment Review
                (United Nations Environment Programme)
Each issue is devoted to a single environmental topic and/or specific sector
of industry, such as waste minimization from a variety of viewpoints.

                 International Environment Reporter
                      (Bureau of National Affairs)
Contains sections on current news and conferences with a reference file on
bilateral agreements, European conventions, and foreign environmental
legislation.

                 Multinational Environmental Outlook
                        (Business Publishers)
This biweekly publication summarizes global environmental news events,
including key environmental legislation and corporate ventures on an
international scale.

                           World Watch
                       (World Watch Institute)
World Watch magazine covers a wide range of global environmental and
development issues. Written for the layperson, it analyzes environmental
problems and offers political as well as environmental solutions.
    International Collection

The International Collection at the
EPA Headquarters Library covers
a   wide   range   of  global
environmental issues.  Materials
include        environmental
organizational directories, reports
produced by the United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP)
and the  European Community
(EC),  as well as worldwide
environmental legislation.  Most
items  in the collection circulate,
and we  encourage  all  EPA
employees with an interest  in
international issues to  utilize the
materials.

The International Collection
contains:

• books and monographs
• vertical file of ready-reference
information
• pamphlet file of items received
from foreign governments  and
international organizations.

The INFOTERRA staff appreciates
any suggestions   concerning
materials to be considered for
inclusion  in the   International
Collection.  More importantly, we
would  like to encourage you  to
donate materials to the Collection
that you feel may be of interest to
others working in the field.
