INTRODUCING BIBLIOFILE - OUR NEW LIBRARY CATALOG -- Liliana Vivanco The catalog of the International Collection will soon be searchable on a compact disk. The combined catalogs of the EPA library network (OLS) and NOAA Library and Information Network Catalog (LINC) will be accessible in a CD-ROM. This CD-ROM is a BiblioFile product from Library Corporation. A pilot version of Bibliofile is now being demonstrated in the Headquarters Library. The demo CD-ROM contains 200 records and is still in the testing stages, but it can give patrons a preview of our future state-of-the-art EPA library catalog . In the Intelligent Catalog, a patron can search using natural language or boolean search operators, or can browse the list of subjects displayed to the right of the screen for serendipitous discoveries. It is designed to "recognize any kind of entry" and "to prevent any search from failing". If the color- coded keyboard is not self-explanatory enough, there is also an on-screen tutorial, as well as context-sensitive help messages at every point in the search process. The Catalog EPA Headquarters Library NEW JOURNAL REVIEW - Liliana Vivanco Tlie International Collection has added a new title, Earfhwatch. to its journal holdings. Earthwatch. a bimonthly magazine published by Earthwatch Expeditions, Inc., features articles on global environmental, anthropological and archaeological issues. Environmental and scientific research articles are supported by outstanding photographs and maps. Earthwatch Expeditions is an international non-profitorganization, with government officials and university professors from different countries acting as advisers and directors. Regular features of Earthwatch include: Great Explorations; Findings; Thinking Aloud; Discoverers; Worlds Beyond Our View, Cost ofLiving, and Letters. In the June issue, all Earthwatch researchand exploration expeditions for 1991-92 are described in the section "Mission to Earth". Expeditions based on the principles of ecotourism are categorized broadly by their nature (Understanding the earth; Strategies for survival; Human factor; Managing the planet Earth), and then more precisely by their purpose (Learning from extinction; Animalbehavior; Rise and fall of societies; Monitoringglobal change; etc.). will give search advice when requested, log the search, save it and print it. BiblioFile can be programmed to reply to any of three levels of user sophistication, can be updated monthly as new records are added, and will produce circulation status reports to locate library materials. ------- |
