UPDATE
UNITED STATES ENVIRONMENTAL
TRAINING INSTITUTE
The Environmental Protection Agency
recently launched the United States Environmental
Training Institute (USETI) as a joint venture be-
tween the U.S. environmental industry and the
Federal government. USETI is designed to provide
training courses in sound environmental technolo-
gies and practices to qualified public and private
sector officials from developing countries. As a
non-profit organization, USETI operates through
private-sector organizations as well as relevant
government agencies and academic institutions.
USETI was created both to protect the
global environment by promoting the transfer of
environmental problem-solving technologies and to
increase U.S. competitiveness in the environmental
market overseas. It utilizes resources which are
designed to fulfill the environmental training needs
of developing countries while also facilitating the
dissemination of technical know-how and the sale of
U.S. products and services.
The U.S. public sector works with USETI in
an advisory role. Key government officials from
agencies such as the EPA and the U.S. Information
Agency (USIA) serve on USETI's Board of Advi-
sors. They also provide in-kind support such as
orientation courses, production of the USETI course
catalog, and scholarships to help offset the partici-
pants' travel and living expenses during training.
The U.S. Agency for International Development
(AID), and the U.S. Trade and Development Pro-
gram (TOP), AID missions, the Council on
Environmental Quality, and the U.S. Department of
Welcome Aboard
INFOTERRA welcomes Jill Mottom (contractor) to
the position of Library Technician. Jill received her
undergraduate degree from Penn State. She has
experience working in a variety of library settings,
including community and corporate libraries. Jill
can be reached at (202) 260-9357.
Commerce are also actively involved in supporting
the Institute.
Landfill Management was the subject of
USETI's first training course which was held May 12-
21,1992. Entitled "Advanced Landfill Management",
the course was sponsored by Waste Management,
Inc. in conjunction with the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency, the Department of Justice, and
other U.S. Government and private entities. The
twelve participants, all key decision-makers in govern-
mental bodies or private corporations specializing in
solid waste disposal, were from eight countries:
Brazil, India, Indonesia, Korea, Mexico, the Philip-
pines, Taiwan, and Thailand. They attended four
days of briefings in Washington, D.C. on environmen-
tal policy, regulations, comparative risk, and pollution
prevention. They then travelled to Oak Brook, Illinois
for a four-day, hands-on course at the solid waste
disposal training facilities of Waste Management, Inc.
In addition to a second sponsored Landfill
Management course this Fall, USETI plans to offer
courses in Bioremediation, Environmental Restoration
at Nuclear Sites, and Air/Water Quality Treatment. In
1993 USETI will offer additional courses in subjects
such as Industrial Pollution Prevention, Waste Water
Treatment, Energy Demand Management and
Efficiency, and Environmental Project/Monitoring
Design.
