INTRODUCTION
Secretary Hieke1 announced the establishment of several enforcement
workshops to discuss the vater pollution abatement programs on a subbasin
basis. The following indicates the area of discussion for each workshop
location:
Location Subbasin Rivers
Toledo, Ohio Maumee River Basin Maumee and Tributaries
Sandusky, Ohio North Central Ohio Portage, Sandusky, Huron,
Vermilion, Black
Cleveland, Ohio Greater Cleveland-Akron Rocky, Cuyahoga, Chagrin
Ashtabula, Ohio Northeast Ohio Grand, Ashtabula, Conneaut
Erie, Pennsylvania Pennsylvania Entire Lake Erie-
Pennsylvania ares
Lackawanna New York Entire Lake Erie-New
(Buffalo), N.Y. York Area
The Maumee River Basin area is largely agricultural, however, there
is a large agricultural, municipal, and industrial loading to the waters.
The communities in this area range from small rural communities to two
of the largest in the Lake Erie Basin. The predominant industrial
activity is production of petroleum products. However, there are rather
diverse industrial activities in the area with other major activities
including canning and other food processing, metal finishing, and manu-
facturing.
ABATEMENT SCHEDULES
At the March 22, 1967 reconvening of the Lake Erie Enforcement Con-
ference, the conferees for each state submitted time schedules for abatement
of pollution from municipal and industrial waste discharges within the
Lake Erie basin. The following table summarizes the established schedules
for the Maumee River Basin area:

PHOSPHORUS REMOVAL SCHEDULES
Included in the recommendations of the Lake Erie Enforcement Con-
ference is the removal of phosphorus from sewage treatment plants by 1971.
At the June 27, 19^9 progress evaluation meeting, compliance schedules were
submitted. The municipalities in the Maumee area required to remove phos-
phorus and the compliance date established by the State for each plant is
as follows:
INDIANA
All municipalities with populations greater than 2,000
will "be required by Indiana to have phosphorus removal
