                             INTRODUCTION

The increasing need by Federal and State regulatory officials,
extension service personnel, and industry and agricultural grower
organizations for up-to-date information on pesticides registered
by the Pesticides Regulation Division has prompted this publication.
Under the present circumstances this Division must furnish accurate
and timely information on new pesticide uses and changes in old uses
to various people involved with the dissemination of information
to the many users of registered pesticide products.

The Compendium will eventually be a compilation of all uses found on
the labeling of all products registered with this Division. It will
be in loose leaf form, and will be published in increments as the
pages on specific chemicals are completed. The Compendium will be
maintained up to date via the issuance of replacement pages on a
periodic basis.

The Compendium is NOT a list of recommendations, and it is NOT
intended to supplant recommendations made by Federal and State
extension and research agencies.

The Compendium has been divided into the following five volumes:

Volume I - Herbicides and Plant Regulators
Volume II - Fungicides and Nematicides
Volume III - Insecticides, Acaricides, Molluscicides and
                    Antifouling Compounds
Volume IV - Rodenticides and Mammal, Bird and Fish Toxicants
     Volume V - Disinfectants

                               VOLUME IV

The information for each pesticide will be presented in three units,
i.e., properties sheet, representative labels, and patterns of use.
The name used for the pesticide at the top of each page will be the
name required in the ingredient statement on labels of registered
products.

The properties sheet contains various names for the specific pesticide
chemical, the structural and empirical formulas, and pertinent
chemical and physical properties of the pesticide.

Representative labels are provided for the principal types of formula-
tions registered, e.g., emulsifiable concentrates, wettable powders, and
dusts. It is anticipated that these labels will assist the registrants
in the preparation of labeling for their products, and result in more
expeditious processing.

                EPA Compendium of Registered Pesticides
The patterns of use for each pesticide are organized in a columnar
fashion to expedite regulatory needs, assist in the preparation of
new labeling, and to determine the uses found on labels of currently
registered products. The pests or groups of pests to be controlled are
given in the left column under "Species." The registered formulations
are given in the center column, and the use and limitations are listed
in the right column.

The common names of the pest species are used where possible; however,
it is also necessary to use the generic names to separate the different
groups of mice because common names vary considerably in different
sections of the country. The term "commensal rats" refers only to
Rattus nowegiaus and Rattus rattus.

Identification of specific sites is made in the "Use and Limitations"
column where necessary, e.g., sugarcane, orchards, etc. Generally
the use and limitations for control of each particular animal encompass
most sites where the animal is found.

The pagination adopted for the Compendium is necessary to allow for
expansion of the volume. A theoretical page number would be
IV-A-01-OO.aa or IV-A-01-00.01. The first number (Roman numeral)
indicates the volume in which the page belongs. The capital letter
indicates the alphabetical group in which the chemical has been placed.
For instance, the page for 4-aminopyridine bears the letter "A." The
first two digits indicate the page number assigned to the chemical
within the alphabetical group. The two letters or numbers after the
decimal point indicate the pages within the chemical, while the middle
two digits are available for the insertion of new chemicals added to
the volume after publication. Letters after the decimal are used
for-pages of the properties sheet and the representative labels, while
the numbers after the decimal are for the pages containing the patterns
of use. The actual page numbers are reduced for simplicity by
eliminating the ciphers where possible. Thus typical examples of page
numbers are IV-A-l.a or IV-A-2.1, or IV-A-2-1.1 where a new chemical
has been added after publication.

The basic volume is being issued at this time without the properties
sheets and representative labels. These will be issued as supplemental
material as they are prepared.

             USE AND LIMITATIONS

BUILDINGS: Place out in tablespoonful
quantities at intervals where rodents are
active. Expose along walls, in corners and
concealed places where mice can feed
undisturbed. Bait placements should be
inaccessible to children, pets or domestic
animals or exposed in tamperproof bait boxes.
Collect and destroy uneaten baits at the end
of 72 hours. Do not retreat with zinc
phosphide for 30 days.

Mix directly with bait materials at the rate
of 1 to 4 parts by weight. Expose according
to the instructions given above.

Mix toxicant with fresh bait materials, such
as, corn meal, fish, meat, fruit, etc. at the
rate of 1 ounce per 6 pounds. Do not use
foods which will be attractive to children,
such as, candy, cookies, nuts, etc. Expose
as per instructions above.

ORCHARDS: Bait in fall right after harvest
and before leaf fall. Pick up drops if
feasible. Treat on warm, clear days.
Retreatment may be necessary if heavy rains
follow soon after baiting or if mice move
into the area later in the season. From the
standpoint of birds and other wildlife, hand
placement directly into runways and under
cover is the preferred method.

Handbaiting; Treat 2-4 spots with
teaspoonful quantities of bait around the
dripline of each tree. Pay particular
attention to low areas, rock outcrops,
fence rows and orchard borders. Bait
should be placed near holes to underground
burrows or in active runways and under
vegetation or artificial covers. Apply at
the rate of 2-3 pounds per acre. Preferred
method for concentration of 1% and less.

             USE AND LIMITATIONS

Machine baiting: Use modified corn planter,
setting plates to drop one kernal per inch
in a line just inside the dripline on both
sides of the trees. Apply at the rate of
3-6 pounds per acre. With a trailbuilder
machine, drop teaspoonful of bait at 4-5
foot intervals in the artificial trail made
by the machine just inside the drip line on
both sides of the trees. Apply at the rate
of 2-3 pounds per acre.

Broadcast baiting: Spread bait evenly by
hand, cyclone seeder or aircraft. Concentrate
on areas with heaviest vegetative cover.
Avoid broadcasting on bare ground or on
growing crops. Apply at the rate of 6-10
pounds per acre.

Dust one level teaspoonful of the toxicant
over one quart of 1/2 inch apple cubes or
other fresh bait. Tumble in bucket to
distribute chemical evenly over the bait
surfaces. Make 2-4 bait placements per tree
into active runways under natural or
artificial covers. Do not disturb the runways.

Mix with cracked corn at the rate of 2 pounds
of toxicant to 100 pounds of bait. Apply
according to the instructions under 0.92-2%
bait as given above.

FORESTS, FORAGE CROPS AND NURSERIES: The
above methods with slight modifications can
be used on these sites. Broadcasting,
however, is generally the most practical
method.

After prebaiting with clean bait for 3-4
days (this is not necessary when placing
bait directly into burrows) to determine
preferred sites, dust concentrate on cut
pieces of root vegetable or apple baits at
the rate of 54.1 grams per 10 pounds of
bait materials. Shake to distribute toxicant
over the exposed bait surfaces. Place baits
into burrows, on floating rafts (4x4 feet)
or bait boards (6x6 inches). The latter
are anchored on the water beyond the reach
of cattle and nontarget wildlife. Trail
baiting can be done where raft baiting is
not successful. Consult with state and
local authorities for permission to control
these animals by this method.

Peel and cut carrots or sweet potatoes into
3/4 x 3 inch lengths. Sprinkle 1/2 ounce of
toxicant over 4 quarts of bait. Probe into
runways and put one bait per runway. Cover
opening to exclude light and loose dirt.
Registered for Arizona only.

Tablespoon amounts (1/4 to 1/2 ounce) of
bait should be placed at 8 to 12 foot
intervals. Place baits in locations where
mice feed, water or travel along walls, in
corners and in concealed places. An
uninterrupted supply of bait should be
maintained for at least 15 days or until
all signs of rodent activity have stopped.
If these bait sites are accessible to
children, pets or domestic animals, they
should be kept in tamperproof boxes.
Replace contaminated or exhausted bait
within 24 hours. Where a continuous source
of infestation is present, permanent bait
stations should be established and the bait
replenished as needed. Baits should be
picked up and disposed of upon completion of
rodent control program.

Mix 1 part by weight to 19 parts of bait
materials, such as, ground corn, oats or
other grains. The addition of up to 5%
sugar and up to 5% oil may increase the
acceptance of the bait and improve the
mixing quality. Expose bait as above.

Reformulating use only.
Cereal bait impregnated with paraffin is
used in sewers, outdoor placements or other
excessively damp locations where unprotected
bait would rapidly spoil. Paraffin baits
should not be used to replace other baits in
dry locations.

FIELD CORN: Apply treated corn chops bait by
broadcasting evenly in swaths 10-15 feet wide
with 30-35 rows between swaths. Use at the
rate of 1 pound per acre based on the total
area to be protected. Repeat after a heavy
rain or when bait becomes depleted. Three or
four treatments may be necessary when bird
damage is severe. Retreatment swaths should
be alternated so that total material applied
in one season is evenly distributed over the
field. Leave a 50 foot untreated swath
around the field edge. A tolerance of 0.1
ppm has been established.

FIELD CORN: Mix thoroughly at the rate of 1
pound to 9 pounds of similar untreated corn
chops bait. Apply as above.

URBAN ROOSTS AND AGRICULTURAL AREAS:
Prebaiting with untreated grains (corn chops,
sorghum, wheat or mixed grains) of essentially
the same composition as the finished bait is
usually essential. Amount exposed should be
limited and scattered to minimize damage to
nontarget species and to obtain maximum
results on the target species with minimal
loss of birds. Repeat treatment until the
desired density of birds is obtained.

Corn chops bait used as above.
AGRICULTURAL AREAS: Prebait with whole corn
and expose limited and scattered amounts to
minimize damage to nontarget species with
minimal loss of birds. Repeat treatment until
the desired density of crows is obtained.

Refer to blackbirds above.
Refer to blackbirds above.
AIRPORTS AND DUMPS: Prebait with pieces of
bread slices cut into 12 individual squares
by tossing bait from a slowly moving vehicle
or placing bait on ground in preferred sites.
After bait is being taken, cut 2 slices of
bread into 24 equal squares and place in 8
gram packet. Fasten top and thoroughly
tumble. Disperse bait in same manner as
prebait using treated bread pieces at the
ratio of 1:10 untreated baits. For flocks
under 5,000 birds use only half of the treated
baits at one time. Repeat until the proper
density of gulls is obtained for the area.

URBAN ROOSTS: Prebait with whole corn or
other grain until bait is well accepted.
Expose treated bait at the ratio of 1 to
10-29 parts (lower dilutions are used where
ample food is already available) of untreated
grain on sites preferred by the pigeons.

LIVESTOCK FEEDLOTS: Expose bait in the
morning on sites where birds are observed
feeding. Pets should be kept from eating
bait as it is made more attractive by the
addition of peanut butter. Repeat until
desired degree of control is obtained.

For shallow ponds, lakes and reservoirs,
disperse within top 5 feet of water level
with a seed spreader. One package (8 Ibs.
4 oz.) will treat 30 acre-feet* at 1 ppb.
Actual rate depends upon species of fish,
temperature and quality of the water.

For upper layer of deep lakes and channels
that do not exceed 15-20 feet in depth,
disperse with a spreader at the rate of 7
pounds to 127 acre-feet* to give a 1 ppb
concentration.

For running streams and very shallow waters,
apply with sprayer or drip stations in
running streams to a depth of 2-3 feet.
Five gallons treats 38 acre-feet* of water
at 1 ppb.
*ACRE-FOOT: Unit of volume of a body of water having the area of one acre
and a depth of one foot. To determine acre feet in a body of water, make
a series of transects across the water body taking depth measurements with
a measured pole or weighed line. Add the soundings and divide by the
number made to determine the average depth. Multiply this average depth
by the total surface to find the acre feet to be treated.

HOMES: Place in small watering fonts or
saucers (maximum amount - 2 fluid ounces)
at 10 foot intervals where mice feed, water
or travel. Remove all other sources of
water insofar as practical. Place in
tamperproof bait boxes made of metal or wood
with baffled entrances. Do not treat the
same area with arsenic trioxide baits in
less than 60-day intervals. Pick up and
bury dead animals and burn or bury all bait
containers at completion of control program.

INDUSTRIAL USE: Refer to homes above.
Roll turf or press down sections of raised
runways with heel and mark these sites.
Active runways will be raised back up in
24 hours. Probe into these with a sharp
stick at 10-foot intervals and drop several
particles of bait into the probe hole.
Cover probe hole so as to exclude light and
loose dirt. Roll turf a week later and
retreat any active runways. On deep runways,
dig center of dirt plug out from conical
mounds. Drop several baits into the runway
and cover as above.

BULB PROTECTION: In fall plantings, pack
1/4-inch of dirt around bulb and put several
baits around the sides before planting in
the ground.

ESTABLISHED HARBORAGE: To repel rodents
from burrows and established harborages
dilute 1 part repellent with 10 parts of
water or kerosene. Apply as a coarse
spray to wet the opening and inside the
burrow for 8-10 inches. Close burrow
with soil and respray the area until wet.
When new openings appear, repeat the
procedure. Registered for use only in
Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri,
Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

UNDERGROUND CABLES: Mix 1 gallon with 49
gallons of water or petroleum oil, such as,
kerosene. Do not use oil solution about
cables with rubber jackets or other oil-
susceptible jacketing. Apply as a spray at
about 60 psi pressure and at the rate of 2
pounds of active ingredients per mile of
buried cable. Depending upon soil conditions,
50 gallons of solution will treat about one
mile of cable in the trench. Use sufficient
spray to treat a 2-inch area of soil
immediately surrounding the cable. Increase
the soil treatment area as the cable is
brought to surface of the ground for
connections.
ESTABLISHED HARBORAGE:
under house mice.

and spray both sides with repellent solution,
particularly on the edges most subject to
attack. Do not use boards made of sulfite

             USE AND LIMITATIONS

Place 4 to 16 ounces of bait per placement.
Put baits in locations where rats feed,
water or travel along walls, in corners and
in concealed places. An uninterrupted supply
of bait should be maintained for at least 10
days or until all signs of rodent activity
have stopped. If these bait sites are
accessible to children, pets or domestic
animals, they should be kept in tamperproof
boxes. Replace contaminated or exhausted
bait within 24 hours. Where a continuous
source of infestation is present, permanent
bait stations should be established and the
bait replenished as needed. Baits should be
picked up and disposed of upon completion of
rodent control program.

SOLID BAITS: Mix at the rate of 1 part by
weight to 9 parts of bait materials, such as,
ground corn, oats or other grains. The
addition of up to 5% sugar and up to 5% oil
may increase the acceptance of the bait and
improve the mixing quality. Expose bait as
above.

LIQUID BAITS: Dissolve at the rate of 1
pound per 4 gallons of water. Expose in pint
nonmetallic chick waterers or fonts. Expose
as described above.

Mix at the rate of 1 part by weight to 19
parts of bait materials, such as, ground
corn, oats or other grains. The addition of
up to 5% sugar and up to 5% oil may increase
the acceptance of the bait and improve the
mixing quality. Expose bait as above.

Dust powder into burrows and holes with a
standard dust pump. Spread a thin layer of
dust in patches on the floor where the
rodents travel. Do not expose where powder
may contaminate foodstuffs or feed. After
completion of control program, collect all
dead animals and clean up remaining powder.

botanical origin.
*ACRE FOOT is a unit of volume of a body of water having the area of one
acre and a depth of one foot. To determine acre feet in a given body of
water, make a series of transects across the water body taking depths
with a measured pole or weighted line. Add the soundings and divide by
the number made to determine the average depth. Multiply this average
depth by the total surface to find the acre feet to be treated.

Put strychnine-salt mixture in 1 inch
diameter holes bored in 2 x 4 x 8-inch
blocks. The 1.5-inch deep holes should
be half-filled with the mixture. Place
along trails in inconspicious places.
Pick up blocks when poisoning operations
are concluded.

Grain bait is placed in teaspoon quantities
in shallow containers. Placements should
be 8 to 10 feet apart in locations where
mice feed, water or travel along walls, in
corners and concealed places. If these
bait sites are accessible to children, pets
or domestic animals, they should be kept in
tamperproof boxes. Pick up dead animals
and uneaten bait for proper disposal upon
the completion of the rodent control
program.

ORCHARDS: Place teaspoon quantities of
bait in surface trails and near burrow
entrances under vegetation or artificial
covers. Put 2 to 4 baits per tree base.
One pound of bait will treat 2 to 3 acres.

In broadcast baiting, throw tablespoon
quantities under heavy cover along tree
rows, rock outcroppings and fence lines
or use a cyclone seeder. Do not expose
bait on the bare ground. Six to 10
pounds will treat 1 acre.

Apply as above under broadcast baiting for
meadow mice.

LAWNS: Roll turf or press down sections of
raised runways with heel and mark these
sites. Active runways will be raised back
up in 24 hours. Probe into these with a
sharp stick at 10-foot intervals and drop
several particles of bait into the probe
hole. Cover probe hole so as to exclude
light and loose dirt. Roll turf a week
later and retreat any active runways. On
deep runways dig center of dirt plug out
from conical mounds. Drop several baits into
the runway and cover as above.

BULB PROTECTION: In fall plantings, pack
1/4 inch of dirt around the bulb and put
several baits around the sides before
planting in the ground.

HANDBAITING: Remove earth plug from lateral
tunnels on fresh mounds. Insert tablespoon
quantity of bait in main runway with
longhandled spoon. Cover opening so as to
exclude light and loose dirt. The main
runway can also be located by probing with
a stick or metal rod about 8-18 inches
back from the plug mark in the mound. When
runway is found, enlarge hole to put in bait
and cover as before. After 48 hours, scrape
over mounds and retreat those still active.
One pound will treat 5 to 8 acres.

BURROW BUILDER: On extensive areas use a
"burrow builder" machine to make artificial
burrows 20 feet apart across the field at
the same depth as the natural burrows.
Drop baits mechanically at 9-12 inch
intervals in these tunnels. One to 2 pounds
will treat 1 acre by this method.

Nail block containing strychnine-salt
mixture to trunk of tree about 8 inches
above one of the larger branches and 10 feet
or more above the ground.

Make a paste of the strychnine-salt mixture
by adding a few ounces of soft cooking fat
or cake the mixture by adding a little
water. This is used in baiting dens in
ledges, lava flows and rock slides. Put as
far back from the opening as possible. If
a wooden block or other movable container
is used, fasten it securely. Do not bait
hollow logs and other small temporary den
sites in this manner.

After prebaiting with unpoisoned grain for 3
days, scatter tablespoon quantities of bait
at edge of bare ground around the mound on
the side away from the pile of dirt removed
from the burrow. Consult Fish and Game
authorities for presence of endangered
blackfooted ferret before controlling a
specific town.

Place tablespoon quantities of grain bait at
15-foot intervals under vegetative cover or
broadcast by hand or with cyclone seeder
where cover completely obscures the ground.
Five to 10 pounds will treat 1 acre.

Scatter teaspoon quantities of bait over
square foot of bare ground within 2 to 3
feet of burrow entrance. One pound treats
10 to 15 acres.

Place 1 tablespoon quantities of bait under
vegetative cover and in mouth of rock dens
and other hiding places.
