Road Map to Understanding Innovative
Technology Options for Brownfields
Investigation and Cleanup, Fourth Edition
The Brownfields program empowers states, communities, and
other stakeholders to work together for the redevelopment of
abandoned sites that have been used for industrial and commercial
purposes. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA)
Office of Superfund Remediation and Technology Innovation
(OSRTI) offers assistance to brownfields stakeholders in meeting
the challenges of site cleanup and redevelopment. OSRTI
encourages the use of smarter solutions for characterizing and
cleaning up contaminated sites by advocating more effective,
less costly technology approaches.
OSRTI is pleased to announce the availability of the fourth edition
of the Road Map to Understanding Innovative Technology
Options for Brownfields Investigation and Cleanup (EPA 542-
B-05-001). Developed for use by a broad audience, the Road
Map assists brownfields stakeholders identify and select innovative
site characterization and cleanup technologies to support
brownfields redevelopment.
Available in hard copy or online at the Brownfields and Land
Revitalization Technology Support Center Web site
(www.brownfieldstsc.org), the Road Map provides a general
outline of the steps involved in site cleanup and introduces brownfields stakeholders to the range of technology
options and available resources. The Road Map includes hundreds of resources and 16 one-page topic "spotlights".
It identifies potential technology options available at each of the basic phases in the characterization and cleanup
of brownfields sites: Site Assessment, Site Investigation, Assessment of Cleanup Options, and Cleanup Design and
Implementation. The Road Map is not a guidance document; rather, each section describes the steps involved in
characterization and cleanup and connects those steps with available resources. Appendices in the Road Map include:
• A guide to contaminants commonly found at brownfields sites and technologies for investigation and cleanup
• An acronym list and glossary of key terms used in the Road Map
• A list of state and EPA points of contact
• An alphabetical index of all of the resources contained in the Road Map
All of the resources identified in the Road Map can be viewed or downloaded directly at www.brownfieldstsc.org
or accessed online using links provided on the Web site.
