Purpose of the Guide
~be -est ^sed :o Determine tne c;ry 'uel economy estimate simulates a
7.5-mne. stoo-ana-go trio with an average speed of 20 mph. The trip
rakes 23 minutes and has 18 stops. About 18 percent of the time is
spent pa!irg, as n waiting at traffic lights or in rush hour traffic. Two
kinds 0! engine starts are used—the cold start, which is similar to
starting a car 'n 'he morning after it has been parked all night—and
the not stan, similar to restarting a vehicle after it has been warmed
up, driven and stopped for a short time.
The test to determine the highway fuel economy estimate represents .
mixture of "non-city" driving. Segments corresponding to different
kinds of rural roads and interstate highways are included. The test
simulates a 10-mile tno and averages 48 mph. The test is run from a
hot start and has little idling time and no stops (except at the end of tt
test).
The Gas Mileage Guide >s auolisned by 'he J.3. ^eDartrrert 3t
Energy as an aid to consumers considering :he purchase ;t a new
vehicle. The Guide lists estimates ot miles 3er gallon (mpg) 'or aacn
vehicle available for the new model year. ~hese estimates are
provided by the U.S Environmental P'ctecfon Agency ;n ccmciiance
with Federal Law.
This Guide is intended to help consumers :omcare the fuei economy of
similarly sized cars, lignt duty 'rucks and sceciai ourcose /emcias.
The vehicles listed m this Guide have oeen Divided 'nto three classes
of cars (sedans, two-seaters, and station *agonsi, three classes of
light duty trucks (vans, small SICK-UDS ana arge oicvuosi arc -n'ae
classes ot special ouroose vehicles 2-wneei arive -i-wneei :rve anc
cab chassis:.
By > ising this Guide consumers can estimate the average /eanv 'uei
cost for any vehicle. The mileage figures inciuaea -n this Guiae are
most useful when comparing venicles. The actual mileage when driving
a vehicle may differ considerably from the predicted mileage.
All new car and light duty trucK dealers are reouired to nave copies ot
this Guide available and prominently displayed -n their showrooms
The Department of Transportation is empowered to oenahze dealers
who fail to display the Guides as orescnbea oy !aw.
Interior Volume
The interior volume is listed ,n the index 'or aach body style '2-aoor,
4-door, and hatchback) exceot for two-seaters and trucks, and is a
wr.y of estimating the space 'n a car. The ntenor volume is given as
two numbers in cubic feet (for example. 57/'2) The 'irst number is
an estimate of the size of the passenger compartment. This numoer
is based on four measurements—head room. shoulder -oom. hip
room, and leg room—for both the 'rent ana -ear ~eats The second
number is the size of the trunk or, in station wagons and hatchbacks.
the cargo space behind the second seat in a few cases, the addition of
the passenger and cargo voiume numoers .n the table at the end of the
Guide indicate that a vehicle should be m tne next nigner classification.
This is not the case as the average data m :his "acie .iave oeen
rounded to the nearest whole numoer.
How the Fuel Economy
Estimates Are Obtained
NCTE To TiaKe the numoers in the Gas Mileage Guide more
useful for consumers, EPA ad]usts these laboratory test results
to account 'cr :he difference oetween controlled laboratory con-
ditions ana actual driving on the road The laboratory fuel
economy -esults are adjusted downward to arrive at the
estimates in this booklet and on the labels seen on new cars,
hgnt auty trucks, and vans. The city estimate is lowered by 10.
percent and the highway estimate by 22 percent from the
!acoratory test results. Exoerience has proven that these
aaiusTments make the mileage estimates in this Guide
ccrrascona mere closely to the actual fuel economy realized
oy the average onver.
Factors Affecting MPG
No test can simulate all possible combinations of conditions, climate
dnver behavior and car care habits. Actual mileage depends on how
when, and where the vehicle is driven. EPA has found that the mpg
obtained by most drivers will be within a lew mpg of the estimates ir
this booklet
Factors that Can Raise ~jel Economy
• Comoine errands into one trip
• Turn an engine off rather than letting it idle for more than a mini.
• Get tune-ups regularly The car ,vill run more smoothly and
efficiently
• Keep tires .nrlated to the manufacturer's recommended maximur
pressure
• Anticipate traffic stoos.
The fuel economy estimates are based on 'esuits of tests "equirea oy
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ,EPA). These tests are used
to certify that vehicles meet the Federal emissions and fuel economy
standards. Manufacturers test pre-production crototypes ot the new vehicle
models and submit the test results to EPA. EPA :hen confirms the ac-
curacy of the figures provided by the manufacturers. The vehicles are
driven by a professional driver under controlled 'accratory conditions,
on an instrument similar to a treadmill. These orocedures ensure 'hat
each vehicle is tested under identical conditions: therefore, the 'esuits
can be compared with confidence.
There are two different fuel economy estimates for eacn vehicle m this
Guide, one for city driving and one for hignway driving To generate
these two estimates, separate tests are used to 'ep'esent typical
everyday driving in a city and in a rural setting.
Factors that Can Lower Fuel Economy
• Jac^rabbit starts waste fuel
« Traveling at higher speeds lowers fuel economy. Traveling at 65
mph instead of 55 mpn lowers fuel economy over 15 percent.
• Carrying unnecessary weight in the vehicle wastes fuel.
• Revving the engine before it is shut off is not necessary for toda
vehicles and will use more fuel.
• Operating a vehicle with the front wheels out of alignment uses
more fuel.

Gas Puzzler Tax
The Energy Tax Act of 1978 established a Gas Guzzler Tax on the sale
of new model year vehicles whose fuel economy fails to meet certain
statutory levels. The fuel economy figures used to determine the Gas
Guzzler Tax are different from the fuel economy values contained in
this booklet. The tax does not depend on your actual on-the-road mpg,
which may be more or less than the EPA published value.
The purpose of the Gas Guzzler Tax is to discourage the production
and purchase of fuel inefficient vehicles. The amount of any
applicable Gas Guzzler Tax paid by the manufacturer will be disclosed
on the automobile's fuel economy label.
Check the Fuel Economy Label on the Vehicle at the
dealer's showroom for its MPG ratings. The MPG will vary
because of engine emission controls and fuel system
differences not listed in the Guide.
-------
-Annual Fuel Costs
"uel costs are continually changing ana vary consideraoly oy area. The
tallowing chart enables you to estimate annual costs using fuel prices in
your area. These costs are Daseo on 15.000 miles of driving per year.
The annual fuel cost displayed on the fuel economy label of 1992 cars,
light duty trucks and vans is based on 15.COO milies of driving and
costs of S1.35 per gallon for premium unleaded gasoline, or SI .20 per
gallon for regular unleaded gasoline, or 51.25 per gallon for diesel fuel.
It is suggested that you use the chart to figure your costs by first
calculating the cost for the estimatea highway mpg for your car. truck
or van. and then the cost for the estimated city mpg. Multiply eacn
value by the percent of your total anving that ,s done in the city and
oercent that is done on the hignway and ada the two values together to
yield the total cost. For example. :cr someone wno Jid 30 percent city
driving ana CO oercent hignway driving ana .vno was considering
purcnasing a oar. truck or van wnicn Mas 'isted as achieving 35 mph for
highway driving ana 21 mpn for city driving, the calculation would
appear as:
city driving mpg S786
hignway driving mpg $471
Assuming gasoline is 31.10 oer gallon, 'hen. S736 x 0.3) - .5*71 x 0.2)
= 5722. the total annual cost 'or *uei.
Please oe cautioned that simply averaging the mpg for city and
hignwav anving and then looKing up a singie value in the taole will yield
an incorrect answer.
NOTE: Because of the constant changes ;n the once of gasoline, 'uei
economy aoeis may jse different values n estimating the annual fuel
cost.
