About NRMRL

*' Cincinnati, Ohio, is headquarters for the National Risk Management Research Lab-
• oratory (NRMRL). NRMRL advances the scientific understanding and the develop-
ment and application of technological solutions to prevent, control, or remediate
important environmental problems that threaten human health and the environment.
- The NRMRL is comprised of six divisions. The Sustainable Technology Division
'• (Cincinnati) addresses pollution prevention issues by investigating clean processes and
products, by using systems analysis methodologies such as life cycle assessment, and
by addressing multi-media problems such as those from the mining and metal finishing
industries. The Land Remediation and Pollution Control Division (Cincinnati)
conducts research at the bench- and pilot-scale level to explore innovative solutions to
land pollution
problems, field

The Water Supply
and Water
Resources Division
(Cincinnati &
Edison, NJ.)
conducts research to help prepare the primary and secondary regulations for drinking
water and to develop technologies and strategies for controlling water-borne contam-
inants. The Subsurface Protection and Remediation Division (Ada, OK) conducts
research and engages in technical assistance and technology transfer on the chemical,
physical, and biological structure and processes of the sub-surface environment and the
bio-geochemical interactions in that environment. The Air Pollution Prevention and
Control Division (Research Triangle Park, N.C.) characterizes emissions and develops
air pollution controls and strategies for global atmospheric emissions such as green

house gases and for the management of the indoor environment. The Technology
Transfer and Support Division (Cincinnati) provides technology transfer activities,
communication, and coordination of information on ORD's science activities and

The National Risk ManagementResearch Laboratory (NRMRL) is headquartered in
Cincinnati, Ohio with facilities in Ada, Oklahoma, Research Triangle Park (RTF),
North Carolina, and Edison, New Jersey. The laboratory is the principal entity within
the Office of Research and Development responsible for environmental risk manage-
ment research.

In the heart of North Carolina's beautiful Piedmont region is the Research
Triangle Park, a 6,900-acre campus dedicated to Research Triangle Park
nurturing research and development organizations. The RTP, recognized
internationally as an international center for cutting-edge research and
development, is owned by the private, not-for-profit Research Triangle
Foundation. The Research Triangle itself is named for the triangle formed
by the three cities and universities: Duke University at Durham, the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State
University at Raleigh, North Carolina. RTP is already home to nearly 133
