 Project Summary
Proceedings: 1989 International
Conference on Municipal Waste
Combustion
Theodore G. Brna, Compiler
  The proceedings document presen-
tations at the International Conference
on Municipal Waste Combustion (MWC),
held April 11-14, 1989, in Hollywood,
Florida. The objective of the Confer-
ence was to provide an effective inter-
national forum for the exchange and
transfer of information on municipal
solid waste incineration, ash disposal,
and related economic, political, social,
and technical issues.
   This Project Summary was devel-
oped by EPA's Air and Energy Engi-
neering Research Laboratory, Research
Triangle Park, NC, to announce key find-
ings of the research project that is fully
documented in a separate report of the
same title (see Project Report ordering
information at back).

The Conference
   The International Conference on Mu-
nicipal Waste Combustion (MWC), spon-
sored by the United States Environmental
Protection Agency and Environment
Canada,- was held in Hollywood, Florida,
April 11-14,1989. This international forum
provided for the transfer and exchange of
technical information on municipal solid
waste (MSW) incineration and ash treat-
ment/disposal. Participating organizations
included the Air and Waste Management
Association (formerly APCA), the Ameri-
can Society of Mechanical Engineers, and
the World Health Organization. The con-
ference enabled professionals to meet and
share ideas related to the planning, de-
sign, construction, operation, and mainte-
nance of MWC facilities. This forum was
also relevant to those involved in the regu-
lation and research and development of
new technologies addressing pollution
problems related to MSW incineration.
   The Conference proceedings consist
of four volumes and include papers exam-
ining relevant technical, regulatory, and
social issues from the perspective of defin-
ing problems and proposing-solutions, as
well as describing experiences, forecast-
ing trends, and reporting new and improved
technologies. Papers and panel presenta-
tions included:
   International Overviews; MWC Planning
and Maintenance; Ash Characterization and
Leaching; Risk and Health Effects; MWC
Performance; Ash Treatment, Utilization,
and Disposal; Sampling and Analysis; Resi-
due Issues and Research Needs; Com-
bustion Technology; Economic and Social
Issues; Flue Gas Cleaning; Materials Re-:
covery and Recycling; Quality Assurance/
Quality Control; and Challenges of the '90s.
   Conference registrants exceeded 400
and represented 22 countries. Three key-
noters examined waste management from
the U.S., Canadian, and European per-
spectives. Panelists addressed: (1) resi-
due issues and research needs and (2)
waste management challenges of the
1990s. The 88 technical papers were pre-
sented in three concurrent sessions..
