The Office of Research and Development (ORC
conducts research in the fields of ecology an
ecosystem restoration. ORD's National Risk Manage
ment Research Laboratory (NRMRL) is developin
an inventory of ecosystem restoration projects i
cooperation with the Office of Water to provide
snapshot of restoration practices being applied i
the field.
NRMRL is developing the inventory for ecosyster
restoration projects within the Mid-Atlanti
Integrated Assessment (MAIA) region. The purpos
of this inventory is to provide a central repositor
of restoration project information useful ti
environmental resource managers, policy makers
researchers, consultants, and communities in thi
MAIA region. This effort expands on an existim
inventory, River Corridor and Wetland Restoration
developed by the Office of Water.
Key attributes of this inventory include:
B Accessibility by Internet to enable interestec
parties to explore existing restoratior
methodologies electronically and to compare
techniques and approaches.
B Planning support for ecosystem restoratior
research, fay identifying geographic areas where
restoration is going on and by examining some
of the techniques and approaches being used.
• Information transfer to assist stakeholders in
reviewing existing restoration projects in areas
or regions of special relevance to them.
Go to the joint USEPA Office of Water/ORD River
Corridor and Wetland Restoration web site at:
http://www.epa.gov/owow/wetlands/restore/rpd-2.htm
-------
The inventory area is the MAIA region, as defined
by the following geographic, watershed, and near
coastal areas:
B EPA Region III, which includes Pennsylva-
nia, Maryland, Delaware, the District of
, Columbia, Virginia, and West Virginia
H Delaware Bay and Chesapeake Bay water
sheds, which extend into New Jersey and
New York
B Albemarle-Pamlico Sound watershed, which
extends into the North Carolina coastal
bays
• Delmarva penninsula coastal bays.
This geographic area extends from southern New
York into northeastern North Carolina, and from the
mid-Appalachian highlands to the estuaries.
The inventory encompasses restoration projects
conducted in both aquatic and terrestrial environ-
ments by government entities (federal, state, local)
and nongovernmental organizations.
The inventory includes individual restoration project
information such as a description of the restoration
site, the problem addressed, critical ecosystem/
environmental factors, technical approaches, costs,
and monitoring activities. Each restoration project
listing, also provides contact information or Internet
links to restoration practitioners and researchers as
resources for more detailed data and information.
The project information resides in a web-accessible
database that can be searched for specific projects
or topics of interest.
-------
By providing restoration projects to be included in
this inventory, you will have the opportunity to
showcase your ecosystem restoration efforts and to
share lessons learned with other practitioners in the
MAIA region. This opportunity to include your
projects in the inventory is now available and there
are several options for providing project
information.
On-Llne Project Submission
Beginning in May 2001, you can enter your ecosys-
tem restoration project information on-line by
accessing the Put Your Project on the Map site at:
http://yosemite.epa.gov/water/restorat.nsf/
putPopenform
The Put Your Project on the Map site provides an
interactive response template that will enable you
to list your restoration project(s) by both state and
watershed. The template provides an opportunity to
include such project information as:
B Brief abstract
• Project location and watershed
» Lead restoration point of contact and
planning/implementation partners
0 Project status
• Restoration site size
H Adjacent/greater surrounding area land use
a Descriptive project characteristics (enhance-
ment, restoration, creation)
a Restoration goals
0 Restoration techniques and approaches
m Project outlook and projected ability to
meet desired goals.
The interactive template also provides the oppor-
tunity to enter additional information regarding
other useful aspects of your project.
If you have more than one project to enter into the
inventory, you can create a template from your first
entry to facilitate additional entries.
