National Conference on Management and
Treatment of Contaminated Sediments
This conference is sponsored by the EPA's Office of
Research and Development, National Risk Manage-
ment Research Laboratory, Center for Environmental
Research Information in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Background and Purpose
The problem of contaminated sediments is one of
growing environmental concern. Many areas of the
U.S. have contaminated sediments that require
management and/or treatment, including rivers,
harbors, Superfund sites and the Great Lakes. In
addition, contaminated sediments that are removed by
dredging operations from navigable waterways may
require treatment. EPA will sponsor a technology
transfer conference on the management and treatment
of contaminated sediments on May 13 and 14,1997 in
Cincinnati, Ohio.
The purpose of the conference will be to disseminate
information gained from various EPA programs and
from other organizations, including Environment
Canada, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the
National Research Council, academia and the private
sector, on the management and treatment of contami-
nated sediments. EPA's Office of Research and
Development has conducted research on treatment
technologies through its in-house basic research
program and through its Superfund Innovative Tech-
nology Evaluation demonstration program. The status
of treatment technologies and the results from these
programs will be presented at the conference. Private
vendors who have experience in the treatment of
contaminated sediments will have exhibit booths at the
conference.
The conference will include presentations and discus-
sions of the following issues:
- Nature and extent of contaminated sediments
- Significance of problem - biological and chemical
effects
- Contaminated Sediment Inventory
- Sediment Quality Criteria
- Management of sediments, including dredging and
containment
- Treatment options: in situ and ex situ
- Demonstration programs - U.S. and Canadian ,
- Current research - public, academic and private
sectors
- Additional information needs
Audience
This conference will be useful to individuals who are
currently involved in evaluating and managing the
removal of contaminated sediments from rivers,
harbors, lakes and coastal areas and those involved in
the treatment of sediments, both in situ and ex situ.
Conference participants will include federal environ-
mental agency personnel, environmental engineering
consultants, independent environmental organizations,
academic researchers and other interested persons.
