Information for Environmental Action
An Information Service for EPA HQ Staff from the Headquarters Library
Accessing the Libraryfs CD-ROM Tower
All Washington area sites will soon be able to access the Headquarters
Library CD-ROM tower through the local area network (LAN). Already, -
Waterside Mall locations that are connected to the LAN can search the
CD-ROMs. We're working on rolling out access to non-Waterside
locations and expect to reach all sites late in 1995.
Once access is available at your site, a batch file must be installed
before you can begin searching the CD-ROMs; either you or your local LAN administrator can load the
file, which is available from the Library. In addition, your personal computer must have sufficient
available memory, i.e., it must have enough random access memory (RAM) to run the CD-ROM access
program; and memory-resident programs will probably need to be removed. If memory is a problem,
contact your LAN administrator. There are sometimes steps they can take to maximize the use of the
available RAM.
Seventeen databases are available through the Library's tower, 'ncluding the Code of Federal
Regulations on BNA's Environment Library, the Federal Register, National Technical Information
Service. (NTIS), Medline, ar.^ Toxline databases. For more information about the CD-ROMs, to request
a copy of the publication that describes the CD-ROMs and their use, or if you have problems accessing
the tower, please call the Library at 202-260-5921 between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. You,
your local LAN administrator, and the Headquarters Library staff are partners in ensuring access. *
There is a New
Head Librarian in
the Headquarters
Library
Barbara MacKinnon/contractor
After four years experience in a regional EPA
library, I had the opportunity to join the staff at the
Headquarters Library beginning mid-May. It's
exciting to be here! I love being in Washington
and still wonder at spending a casual family
Saturday afternoon wandering around the
Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial
and the fact that my jogging route is around the
Iwo Jima Memorial (I hope that excitement
doesn't wear off.)
It might help if I "introduce" myself a little. My
undergraduate degree is in chemistry and I have
a Masters in Library and Information Sciences. I
have worked in an industrial research center
library, an advertising agency library, and the
business library of a metropolitan public library
system. What amazed me was how much of the
past varied experience, especially business, I
have used in providing information services in the
EPA library network context.
I am pleased that the focus at the EPA
Headquarters Library, as elsewhere, is changing
from "books and journals" to information in
whatever format it might be available,
increasingly electronic. Sometimes the
information can be found through commercial :
online databases, or the INTERNET, bulletin
boards, CD-ROMs, books, or journals. In today's
world, the format is le ss important than finding the
information. Our energies will be directed to
supporting the change in focus from library
collection to library services.
Let me know how we can help you with your
information needs. Headquarters Library AII-in-1:

EPA Headquarters Library Logs 52 Millionth
ILL Request
At 11:30 am on June 24,1994, the EPA Headquarters Library gained
national attention by logging the 52 millionth Online Computer Library Center
(OCLC) interlibrary loan request. The request was for the book,
"Reengineering the Corporation: A Manifesto for Business Revolution," by
Michael Hammer. This request was made a mere 60 days after the 51
millionth was logged. An OCLC senior product support specialist said it took two years to reach the first
millionth interlibrary loan and now more than a million occur every two months. These figures show
how valuable and popular OCLC interlibrary loan is to users. EPA Headquarters Library interlibrary
loan service is for EPA personnel only. The Library initiates about 250 borrowing requests and
receives some 350 to 400 lending requests each month. Many of the 28 EPA libraries around the
country borrow materials from one another. The Environmental Protection Agency Headquarters
Library is a member of the FEDLINK network.
OCLC is a nonprofit computer library service and research organization whose computer network
and services link more than 18,000 libraries in 52 countries and territories. *
