Project Summary
Characterization of Hazardous
Waste Sites—A Methods Manual:
Volume II. Available Sampling
Methods—Second Edition
Patrick J. Ford, Paul J. Turina, and Douglas E. Seely
Investigations at hazardous waste
sites and sites of chemical spills often
require onsite measurements and samp-
ling activities to assess the type and
extent of contamination. The full report
is a compilation of sampling methods
suitable to address most needs that
arise during routine waste site and spill
investigations.
This Project Summary was developed
by EPA's Environmental Monitoring
Systems Laboratory. Las Vegas. NV, to
announce key findings of the research
project that is fully documented in a
separate report of the same title (see
Project Report ordering information at
back).
The report is organized by media. After
and introductory section on general con-
siderations, the second section addresses
solids and provides detailed instructions
on eight sampling methods for soils,
sludges, sediments, and bulk materials.
Section 3.0 addresses liquids. Ten
methods are detailed for surface waters,
containerized liquids, and groundwater.
Gases, vapors, and aerosols are covered
in Section 4.0. Twelve methods are
presented for ambient air, soil gases and
vapors, and headspace gases. The last
section briefly discusses ionizing radia-
tion survey instruments. Every method is
referenced, and a bibliography is provided.
Appendices cover Sample Containeriza-
tion and Preservation, Equipment Avail-
ability and Fabrication, Packing and
Shipping Guidelines, Document Control
and Chain-of-Custody Procedures, and
Applicable Tables of statistics and con-
version factors.
This second edition updates the meth-
ods and procedures presented in the first
edition, EPA-600/4-83-040, September
1983.
