The energy used to power small household appliances and consumer electronics is one of the largest and fastest-growing utility costs
in the country. By 2015. this category may be responsible for almost 40 percent of all household electricity use. Consumer electronics
that have earned the ENERGY STAR cost about the same as less efficient models, but they substantially cut energy use and costs.
In order to power features such as clock displays or remote control functions, many consumer electronics products continue to
use energy even when switched off. But ENERGY STAR qualified products in the "off"
position consume up to 50 percent less energy than conventional equipment.

power management features. When equipment is not in use, it automatically enters a low-power
"sleep" mode. An ENERGY STAR qualified computer in "sleep" mode consumes about 80 percent
less electricity than it does in full-power mode. Overall, ENERGY STAR qualified office products
use about half as much electricity as standard equipment. And using less energy
keeps utility costs down. In 2000, Americans saved more than $425 million in energy
costs by using ENERGY STAR qualified office equipment in homes across the country.

utility bills. For example, ENERGY STAR qualified clothes washers use about 50 percent less water
and 70 percent less energy than conventional models, for annual household savings of up to $100.
ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators, too, require about half as much energy as a 10-year-old model
does. If all consumers were to purchase ENERGY STAR qualified appliances instead of standard
models, they would save almost $5 billion in energy costs over the next 15 years.

temperature levels, and better indoor air quality.

Heating and cooling costs are a large part of home energy bills, and ENERGY STAR can provide solutions to reduce them.
First, heating and cooling equipment that has earned the ENERGY STAR such as air conditioners, heat pumps, and furnaces
are from 10-30 percent more efficient than conventional models. Look for the label when replacing equipment. In addition,
ENERGY STAR has recommendations for appropriate sizing and installation of these units, as well as sealing and insulation levels
