                             FOREWORD
The Environmental Protection Agency was created because of increasing
public and government concern about the dangers of pollution to the
health and welfare of the American people. Noxious air, foul water,
and spoiled land are tragic testimony to the deterioration of our
natural environment. The complexity of that environment and the
interplay between its components require a concentrated and integrated
attack on the problem.

Research and development is that necessary first step in problem solution
and it involves defining the problem, measuring its impact, and searching
for solutions. The Municipal Environmental Research Laboratory develops
new and improved technology and systems for the prevention, treatment,
and management of wastewater and solid and hazardous waste pollutant dis-
charges from municipal and community sources, for the preservation and
treatment of public drinking water supplies, and to minimize the adverse
economic, social, health, and aesthetic effects of pollution. This
publication is one of the products of that research; a most vital
communications link between the researcher and the user community.

This summary is a current listing of publications authored by personnel
of the Municipal Environmental Research Laboratory during the period
from 1970 through 1976. Information regarding the availability of
these publications may be found in the Abstract.

                                           Municipal Environmental

                             ABSTRACT
Purpose of Document: To provide EPA personnel and others with a reference
list of publications authored by personnel of the Municipal Environmental
Research Laboratory (and predecessor organizations) during the period 1970-
1976.

What is the MERL: The Municipal Environmental Research Laboratory is a
product of the 1975 ORD reorganization, and contains research programs
drawn from the former National Environmental Research Center (NERC
Cincinnati) including advance waste treatment, solid and hazardous wastes,
and water supply technology development. Located in the Cincinnati
Environmental Research Center building adjacent to the University of
Cincinnati campus, the MERL is organizationally a component of the Office
of Research and Development within the Office of Air, Land and Water Use.

Arrangement of Document: This publication is divided in three sections,
one for each of MERL's line divisions. Within each section, publications
are arranged alphabetically by author. Where an author has more than one
publication, they are arranged alphabetically by title.

Availability of Publication: Because of the elapsed time since printing
and limited original distributions, the best sources for publications that
were printed in professional journals and conference and seminar proceed-
ings will be from libraries.

Publications identified with a NTIS requested identification may be
requested from the National Technical Information Service, U. S.
Department of Commerce, Springfield, Viriginia 22151.

Publications identified with an EPA identification number may be requested
from the Technical Information Staff, EPA Environmental Research Center,
Cincinnati, Ohio 45268.

Publications not otherwise described above may be requested from the
Editorial Assistant, Office of the Director, Municipal Environmental
Research Laboratory, EPA, Cincinnati, Ohio 45268.

This summary is a current listing of publications authored by personnel of the
Municipal Environmental Research Laboratory and its predecessor organizations
during the period from 1970 thru 1976. The publication is arranged in three
sections, one for each of the MERL's divisions. Within each section, publica-
tions are arranged alphabetically by primary author, and alphabetically by
title wherever the author has more than one publication.
