X he Office of Health and Environmental Assessment recently developed and provided the Collection with a prototype CD ROM diskette containing information on models used for exposure assessments and their evaluation and application. The disk ("Exposure Models Library and Integrated Model Evaluation System") also contains the Hazardous Waste Superfund Database and other related information files. If you are interested in learning more about this product, call Richard Walentowicz at 202/260-8922. • RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT Recently, EPA staff asked us to do a computer literature search on environmental problems arising from mining wastes, including their impact on CERCLA responses. Relevant citations found were as follows: • Consideration ofRCRA Requirements in Performing CERCLA Responses at Mining Waste Sites, U.S. EPA, OSWER 9234.0-04, PB91-214205, Aug. 1986. • "Mining Waste Research in the U.S. Bureau of Mines," Proceedings of the Symposium on Environmental Management for the 1990 's, Denver CO., Feb. 25-28, 1991. pp. 199-205. • "Assessment of Water Quality Threats Posed by Mining Waste in California," Proceedings of the Western Regional Symposium Conference on Mining and Mineral Processing Wastes, Berkeley, CA., May 30,1990, pp. 123-132. • "Sea Pollution by Coal Mining Wastes in the Zonguldak Area of Turkey," Proceedings of International Conference on Environmental Pollution, 1991. Publ. by Inderscience Enterprises, Ltd., World Trade Center Bldg, Geneva Aeroport 15, Switz. pp. 821-827. • DID YOU KNOW? • We have just received a sample copy of The Bioremediation Report, a newsletter produced by COGNIS, Inc. Among other things, the publication covers application of bioremediation technologies in pilot projects, profiles of companies taking innovative approaches to the treatment of hazardous wastes and a calendar of events in the field. • An article written by Henry Longest, director of the Office of Emergency and Remedial Response (OERR), is featured in the November/December 1992 issue of Hazardous Materials Control (Vol. 5, No. 6, p. 14). It is entitled: "The Superfund Accelerated Cleanup Model: The Wave of the Future." • The Autumn 1992 issue of Federal Facilities Environmental Journal (Vol. 3, No. 3, pp. 311-326), contains an article which analyzes the facts and impact of litigation addressing the issue of government liability under CERCLA for a subcontractor's past pollution acts. ("Government CERCLA Liability for a Contractor's Past Pollution: The Avtex Case".) • Contact Felice Sacks (contractor), Head Librarian, (202/260-3021), or Craig Lelansky (contractor). POTPOURRI ~"~ Federal Facilities "Resolving the Environmental Complications of Base Closure," Federal Facilities Environmental Journal, Vol. 3, No. 3, Autumn 1992, pp. 279-293. Explores the complexity of environmental hurdles associated with military installation closures. Describes the background of base closures, transfer restrictions of property pursuant to CERCLA, statutory limits in base closure statutes, and the impact of laws governing such closures. \ ' / Superfund __ Decisionmaking 'Illuminating Irrationality: Behavioral Research and the Superfund Law. Parts I and II," Toxics Law Reporter, Vol. 7, Nos. 23-24, Nov. 4,11, 1992, pp. 694-699,722-725 (respectively). Describes examples of irrational behavior in negotiating settlements and litigating Superfund cases. This two part article is based upon economic/behavior research findings as well as the author's experience in this area. The hope is that Superfund practice will become more cost-effective and efficient as participants become aware of irrational influences at work in decisionmaking. • Hazardous Waste Superfund Collection (HWSFC) 202/260-5934 Need a new book or journal? TECHNOLOGY FOCUS • "Soil Sampling and Analysis — Practices and Pitfalls," The Hazardous Waste Consultant, Vol. 10, No. 6, November/ December 1992, pp. 4.1-4.26. Presents a special feature article on soil sampling which addresses questions such as, how many samples to collect, is it acceptable to collect composite samples, what sampling and analytical problems arise, etc. Describes the site survey, sampling and analysis plans, data quality objectives, sampling strategies/methods, sample types, analytical requirements and data validation. • "In Situ Bioremediation - Case Studies," The Hazardous Waste Consultant, Vol. 10, No. 6, November/December 1992, pp. 1.10-1.14. Illustrates some recent usages of insitu bioremediation, including applications combined with aboveground treatment and other uses involving polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and hazardous substance releases at underground storage tank sites. • UPCOMING EVENTS • 2 February, 1993.
