Purpose
This two-day seminar will provide the solvent waste generator
with a comprehensive set of technical and regulatory alter-
natives for the management of such wastes. Many solvent
waste generators will have to find alternative ways of managing
these wastes now that they are banned from, or will shortly be
banned from, landfill disposal. In addition, the liability that such
wastes present when managed improperly has generated
interest in ways to. reuse, treat, minimize, or entirely avoid their
generation. Lastly, as a result of EPA's Waste Minimization
regulations, many plant owners and managers are recognizing
the importance of using solvents efficiently. There are many
alternatives for managing solvent wastes and this seminar will
cover the advantages and disadvantages of these alternatives.
An array of options will be presented as well as case study
examples. Regulations that affect the choice of alternatives will
also be covered.
This seminar has been designed for all industries that use
solvents for parts cleaning, equipment cleaning, and surface
coating. Not covered are solvent usage in dry cleaning or
solvents as extractive or reactive media. The seminar is
designed for businesses of all sizes.
The first morning of the seminar is devoted to regulatory and
legal topics, while the remainder of the program is technical.
The regulatory topics include: land disposal and liquid bans;
burning of hazardous wastes as fuel in boilers and cement kilns;
and the community right-to-know provisions of Title III of
SARA. A legal presentation will also cover corporate liability
under source reduction, on-site or off-site reuse or reclamation,
and treatment. The regulatory topics will be presented by EPA
personnel and the legal presentation will be made by a lawyer
specializing in environmental issues.
The technical topics are divided into three sections: source
reduction, reuse and recycle, and treatment. Within source
reduction are separate presentations on parts cleaning, equip-
ment cleaning, and surface coating. Halogenated and hydro-
carbon solvents will be covered. The reuse and recycle session
will cover all on-site and off-site options for hydrocarbon and
halogenated solvents. The treatment session will cover
destructive technologies as well as those that enhance the
recovery of solvents. Solvent wastestreams and aqueous
wastestreams with low solvent concentrations will also be
covered in the treatment session. Technical speakers are from
industry and consulting firms.
Registration and Hotel Information
There is no fee for attending these seminars. Since registration
will be limited to the space available, the attached registration
