Use EPA's Green Vehicle Guide as a resource in
selecting your next car, SUV or light truck. The
Green Vehicle Guide provides Air Pollution scores
and Greenhouse Gas scores for all vehicles.
The higher the scores, the better it is for the
environment. Compare the scores of different
vehicles or just look for the SmartWay certifica-
tion mark to find the superior environmental per-
formers.
You may be surprised to find that even if you need
a larger vehicle, you may have cleaner choices.
The better the fuel economy, the more money
you'll save at the pump, while also reducing our
dependence on oil.
SmartWaySM is a symbol of excellence for cleaner
and more efficient transportation options.
SmartWay distinguishes only products and ser-
vices that meet superior environmental perfor-
mance characteristics. Look for the SmartWay
mark next time you are in the market for a new or
usedcar-
CHOOSE A CLEANER VEHICLE. Use EPA's Green Vehi-
cle Guide to choose the cleanest vehicle available
that meets your needs. The choice you make will
affect the quality of the air we breathe because
passenger cars and trucks are major contributors to
air pollution.
CHOOSE A MORE FUEL-EFFICIENT VEHICLE. A vehicle
with better gas mileage can travel further on a sin-
gle tank of gas. That means less pollution and less
carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, are added to the
atmosphere. To help you select a more fuel-efficient
vehicle, visit the Green Vehicle Guide at www.epa.
gov/greenvehicles.
DRIVE FEWER MILES. Vehicles contribute almost
one-third of the country's gas fumes, greenhouse
gases and other air pollutants. Whenever possible,
take public transportation, rideshares, and/or com-
bine activities into one trip.
MAINTAIN YOUR VEHICLE PROPERLY. Your vehicle is
designed to perform best when properly maintained.
A poorly maintained vehicle can pollute significantly
more than one that is well maintained.
REFUEL WISELY. When the weather is warm, try to
refuel early in the morning or late in the evening.
This will reduce the release of smog-forming gas
emissions during the heat of the day when smog
forms easiest. On Ozone Action Days, try not to re-
fuel at all. Never top off your tank beyond the auto-
matic shutoff point.

WHERE CAN I FIND MORE INFORMATION ABOUT SMARTWAY CERTIFIED VEHICLES?
Visit EPA's Green Vehicle Guide at www.epa.gov/greenvehicles for information about the environmen-
tal performance of vehicles. The guide provides the user with dynamic search and sort capabilities.
To compare environmental performance, use the 0-10 Air Pollution and Greenhouse Gas scores and the
fuel economy numbers. These can be used to compare any vehicle to any other vehicle, no matter what
types of vehicles you are comparing. And for the easiest comparison of all, use the SmartWay and
SmartWay Elite designations that easily distinguish the cleanest and most fuel-efficient vehicles.
WHAT IS A SMARTWAY CERTIFIED VEHICLE?
A SmartWay Certified Vehicle designation is
determined by how a vehicle scores using EPA air
pollution standards and criteria. Specifically, the
scores are based on emission levels (the Air Pollu-
tion score) and fuel economy values (the Green-
house Gas score). Vehicles that score a 6 (out of
IO) or better on each of the Air Pollution and
Greenhouse Gas scores and achieve a combined
score of at least 13 when added together qualify as
SmartWay Certified Vehicles. Vehicles that quali-
fy for the SmartWay mark are the cleanest and
most fuel-efficient available in today's market.
