MEMORANDUM
SUBJECT: Superfund Site Progress Profiles - Status Report
FROM:
TO:
Purpose;
Michael B. Cook, Director /s/
Office of Superfund Remediation and Technology Innovation
Superfiind National Policy Managers, Regions 1-10
.*»'<*
The purpose of this memorandum is to announce that the Superfund Site Progress Profiles
will be available to the public via the internet on February 11, 2005. We very much appreciate
the assistance of your staff during the extended development of these profiles. The profiles will
provide a nationwide web-based standard for communicating cleanup status at NPL and
Superfund Alternative Sites using CERCLIS data. The web address to search for a specific site
profile will be http.;//www.epa.gov/superfund/sites/cumtes/index.htm. We anticipate that the
profile pages will be accessed over 18,000 times each month. To maintain this as a consistent
source of accurate data your ongoing support is necessary.
Implementation:
The profiles will be automatically updated on a monthly basis. Please ensure that
CERCLIS is kept up-to-date with respect to the information being displayed through the profiles.
Attached are the profile Data Element Dictionary and Data Element Mapping files to assist your
efforts to maintain up-to-date and accurate data in CERCLIS.
The site profiles provide a direct link to regionally maintained Site Fact Sheets (also
known as NPL PADs). These must also be updated concurrently with CERCLIS to be consistent
with the profiles and reflect current site activities, cleanup status, and site contacts. In addition,
any reference to planned funding requests must be removed from these Fact Sheets. Some Fact
Sheets for active (non-CC) NPL sites have not been updated since 2002. HQ will perform regular
spot-check audits on a random number of sites to determine if profiles are up to date and the Site
-------
Fact Sheets provide information consistent with that being displayed by the profiles.
I ask you to continually keep CERCLIS and all Site Fact Sheets up to date. OSRTIHQ
will begin its audit process on the first of March and continue the audits on a regular basis.
Results of the audits in your Region will be provided to you.
Conclusion:
Finally, I wish to thank all Regional staff who assisted in the development of the
Superfund Site Progress Profiles. These profiles are an important communication tool for the
program and your efforts greatly contributed to a well-designed and useful product. Questions
related to this should be directed to Melanie Hoff, (703) 603-8808. Her email is

Attachment A- Methodology Used to Estimate Population within 1-Mile
Area Approximation Method
The latitude, longitude, and area of each site were pulled from the WasteLAN database. Site boundary shape files were not available; therefore, the site
boundary was represented by a circle with an equivalent site area centered around the site latitude/longitude. Using Arc View GIS 3.2, a circular buffer of 1-mile
radius was created around die circular site boundary. Using 2000 Census Block data, all the census blocks were identified and the total population was
calculated in each buffer area.
Latitude/Longitude Method
For sites that do not have site area data, a point (located at the site latitude/longitude) was used for the boundary. Using Arc View GIS 3.2, a circular buffer of
1-mile radius was created around the point Using 2000 Census Block data, all the census blocks were identified and the total population was calculated in each
buffer area.
Population Density Estimate Method
For those sites in U.S. territories and protectorates (e.g., American Samoa, Guam, Virgin Islands) where Census Block data was not available, the population was
estimated by determining the population density of the island on which the site is located and multiplying it by the buffer area. This simple method does not take
into account density differences across the island or the presence of unpopulated areas (e.g, the ocean) within the buffer area.
