Pitot Tube Calibration
Each pitot tube used in sampling meets all requirements of EPA
Method 2, Section 4.1." Therefore, a baseline coefficient of 0.84 is assigned to
each pitot tube. The following pages show the alignment requirements of
Method 2 and the Pitot Tube Inspection Data Sheet(s) for each pitot tube used
during the test program.

Dry Gas Meter and Orifice Meter
Dry gas meters and orifices are calibrated in accordance with Section
3.3.2 of the QA Handbook. This procedure involves direct comparison of the
dry gas meter to a reference dry test meter. The reference dry test meter is
routinely calibrated using a liquid displacement technique. Before its initial
use in the field, the metering system is calibrated over the entire range of
operation. After each field use, the metering system is calibrated at a single
intermediate setting based on the previous field test. Acceptable tolerances
for the initial and final dry gas meter factors and orifice calibration factors

Stack Thermocouples
Each thermocouple is calibrated by comparing it with an ASTM-3F
thermometer at approximately 32°F, ambient temperature, 100°F, and SOOT.
The thermocouple reads within 1.5 percent (%) of the reference thermometer
throughout the entire range when expressed in degrees Rankine. The
thermocouples may be checked at ambient temperature at the test site to
verify the calibration. Calibration data are included in the following

16. ABSTRACT
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is investigating iron and steel foundries to identify and quantify hazardous air pollutants
(HAPs) emitted from cupolas; electric arc furnaces; and pouring, cooling and shakedown operations of sand mold casting processes. General Motors
Corporation, Saginaw Casting Operations (GMC), Saginaw, Michigan was selected by the EPA as the host facility at which to 1) characterize HAP
emissions from cupolas that are controlled by wet scrubbers, and 2) assess wet scrubber performance in controlling HAP emissions from cupolas. GMC
was selected because EPA deemed this facility to be representative of a large segment of the sand casting foundry industry and GMC operates a relatively
large cupola that is controlled by a wet scrubber.
This report presents the results of a manual emissions testing program to characterize emissions from a cupola and assess the performance of the wet
scrubber in controlling HAP emissions. Testing was conducted at the cupola wet scrubber inlet and outlet to determine air emissions of particulate
matter (PM) and metal HAPs; and at the cupola wet scrubber outlet to determine organic HAPs consisting of dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated
dibenzodurans (PCDDs/PCDFs) and semi-volatile organic hazardous air pollutnats (SVOHAPs), and volatile organic hazardous air pollutants (VOHAPs)
The data may be used by the EPA as potential Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) floor technology for cupolas.
During the testing program, Research Triangle Institute (RTI), another EPA contractor, monitored and recorded process and emission control system
operating parameters, and prepared Section 3.0, Process and Control Equipment operation, of this report.
This volume (Volume II) is comprised of 471 pages and consists of Appendices: C (Analytical Data - Particulate Matter and Metals),
D (Calculations), E (QA/QC Data), and F (Participants).
