What Are the Industry
Sector Notebooks?

This series from the U.S. EPA provides information
of general interest regarding industry-specific
manufacturing processes and pollution issues
associated with specific industrial sectors. The
series is unique in taking a holistic, "whole facility"
approach to environmental information, instead of
separating information related to pollutants of air,
water, and land. For each industry the Notebook
contains:
  • information about size, geographic distribution,
     products, and economic trends.
  • a description of manufacturing processes,
including inputs of raw materials and
     pollution outputs.
  • a profile of chemical releases to the
     environment.
  • a summary of federal environmental
     regulations and compliance history.
  • pollution prevention opportunities.
  • government and industry initiatives for
     compliance assurance.
  • resource materials and contacts.
The Industry Sector Notebooks are published by the
Office of Compliance, U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA), and have been thoroughly reviewed
by EPA and outside experts. The Notebooks have all
been carefully researched and referenced, and
include many tables and figures containing
quantitative information relevant to each industry.
Pollutant emission and compliance data from the
1995 Notebooks has been revised in the Sector
Notebook Data Refresh — 7997 (see Ordering
Information). The sector Notebooks are one of the
few sources of consolidated data about an industry.

What Do Users of the
Notebooks Say?

Since 1995, more than 100,000 Notebooks have
been distributed, in hard copy and electronic form.
Users have praised the Notebooks generously. Some
of their comments follow:

"Afy company does regulatory compliance
audits . . . and we use the Notebooks as background
when we are unfamiliar with particular industries.
I really liked the process descriptions and chemical
release information. I think the project is
wonderful. "
    —Environmental consultant

"/ read through the printing Notebook twice. I find
it to be a good all-around reference and a good
background document. It gave me some good ideas
on how to improve operations. "
    —Printing industry commenter

"The Sector Notebooks are a wonderful addition to
our regional library."
    —EPA Region 9 Librarian

"First let me say that the Notebooks are
outstanding—first rate. . . . We use the Notebooks
in a course on industrial ecology to teach students
about the environmental impacts of general
industrial processes."
—Professor, Yale University School of Forestry
    and Environmental Studies

"The Notebooks were very instructive regarding the
relationship between regulatory requirements and
industry technologies."
    —Organisation for Economic Co-operation and
    Development, Environment Directorate, France

"The Notebooks give me a real-world feel for the
environmental issues and technology choices that
industries face."
    —Professor, Clark University
How Are the Industry
Sector Notebooks Used?

This sector-based approach helps readers to:

  • build a foundation for developing holistic
     solutions to environmental problems.
  • perform research on an industry and its
     environmental regulations.
  • understand compliance issues.
  • develop industry-specific training sessions/
     programs.
  • develop curricula for environmentally related
     courses.
  • determine probable cause for a lawsuit,
     citation, or penalty.
  • create and improve innovative pollution
     prevention programs.
