ENERGY STAR Office Equipment Program
Star Bytes
EPA POLLUTION PREVENTER
Stai Syies is a inonihiy
newsletter from the EPA
ENERGY STAR Office
Equipment Program to
communicate ideas and
developments affecting
ENERGY STAR Partners
and Allies and their
products. We welcome
your comments.
Power Management Icon
We strongly encourage Paitners to include an
icon of their choice in their Control Panels
that allows access to or provides information
on the power management features of their
computers. Easy accessibility will greatly
improve consumer knowledge and use of
these features. One option is to use the
ENERGY STAR5" logo as a power management
icon. Partners can request an ENERGY STM icon
installation disk by calling 202-233-9114.
This disk can be customized to indude an
explanation of how to easily change the
default settings on specific models.
Spread the Word about
Energy-Efficient Products
For two years, Partners and Allies
have Utduc aigi'iiiiiani COliu.Gu-
tions to the ENERGY STAR Program,
primarily through the introduction
of thousands of energy-efficient
computer and office products.
While we are very familiar with
and grateful for your efforts, it
appears that the word has not
spread to all consumers. In a
study conducted by Environmental
Research Associates (ERA), almost
six out of 10 respondents said
they couldn't think of a computer
company they considered to be
environmentally responsible. And
more than one out of four said
there is no such company in the
computer industry today. (The
Environmental Report)
We know this perception of the
computer industry is incorrect and
we'd like to see it changed. The
good news from the survey is
consumers said they feel offering
energy-efficient products en-
hances a company's environmen-
tal image. Because you all are
currently doing this, we would like
to help you better promote your
many ENERGY STAR products. (See
page 2 to learn more about EPA's
EI*RCY STAR marketing efforts.)
Together EPA and manufacturers
can work to heighten consumer
awareness of the ENERGY STAR
Program, the availability of
compliant products and their
economic and environmental
beriefVtS. V/e crtc&uragz al! of
our Partners and Allies to
increase and broaden their
ENERGY Sw marketing efforts,
indudir.g more frequent usage
of the ENERGY STARSM logo in
advertisements, development
of educational materials, and
training for sales and technical
support personnel who have
direct contact with customers.
Version 2.0 of the Computer/
Monitor Memorandum of
Understanding (MOD) requires
manufacturers to ship products
with the power management
features enabled. This require-
ment will not only increase
users' energy and monetary
savings, but will also improve
your environmental image since
more consumers will become
aware of the energy-efficient
features. We also encourage
Partners and Allies to share with
us any customer feedback
received about the Program
and/or power management
features. In return, we will do
the same.
Through continued participa-
tion in the ENERGY STAR Office
Equipment Program, Partners
and Allies can promote
themselves as environmentally
conscious companies and
differentiate their products in
the marketplace.

What is EPA Doing to Market
ENERGY STAR?
This summer, EPA and the Ad Council are kicking off a multi-media
campaign to promote ENERGY STAR office equipment to large corporations,
small businesses, home businesses and individual consumers. EPA is also
working with computer retailers and resellers to help them educate their
salespeople about the ENERGY STAR Program and products and to place
marketing materials in their stores, catalogs, etc. This campaign has three
objectives:
• Increase logo visibility among consumers most likely to buy
computers;
• Educate consumers about the benefits of ENERGY STAR computers
and office equipment; and
• Encourage consumers to ask for ENERGY STAR equipment.
EPA plans to provide manufacturers, retailers and resellers with various
promotional materials such as fact sheets, technical briefs and purchasing
guides. Three one-page fact sheets on ENERGY STAR computers and moni-
tors, printers and fax machines, and copiers are now available. These fact
sheets highlight the environmental and monetary benefits of using ENERGY
STAR equipment. They also provide space where you can include your
company information so consumers who are interested in purchasing
ENERGY STAR products can contact you directly. Please call 202-233-9114 if
you would like to receive a camera ready or electronic version of the fact
sheets.
In future issues of Star Bytes, look for updates on our ENERGY STAR marketing
activities. We er.courage all of you to call, write, or fax us to discuss
possible joint marketing efforts or ideas. You can also stop by our offices
to talk about your ideas. Just call 202-233-9114 to make an appointment.
