Beyond the single lake analysis, broader based correlations
between nutrient concentrations (and loading) and trophic condition
are being made to advance the rationale and data base for refine-
ment of nutrient water quality criteria for the Nation's freshwater
lakes. Likewise, multivariate evaluations for the relationships
between land use, nutrient export, and trophic condition, by lake
class or use, are being developed to assist in the formulation of
planning guidelines and policies by the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency and to augment plans implementation by the states.

I. CONCLUSIONS
A. Trophic Condition*:
Survey data indicate that Lake Che'lan is oligotrophic. It
ranked first in overall trophic quality among the 13 Washington
lakes and reservoirs sampled in 1975 when compared using a com-
bination of six water quality parameters**. None of the other
water bodies had less median total phosphorus or mean chlorophyll
a_, one had less median orthophosphorus, four had less median
inorganic nitrogen, but none of the others had greater mean
Secchi disc transparency. No significant depression of dis-
solved oxygen with depth occurred at any of the sampling stations
or times.
B. Rate-Limiting Nutrient:
The algal assay results indicate the lake was phosphorus
limited at the time the sample was collected (09/11/75). The
lake data indicate phosphorus limitation in April and September
but nitrogen limitation in July.
C. Nutrient Controllability:
1. Point sources—The septic-tank phosphorus contributions
of the community of Manson and those serving lakeshore dwellings
amounted to an estimated 1.7% of the total phosphorus input to

Lake Chelan during the sampling year. However, additional study
would be necessary to determine the significance of those sources.
The estimated phosphorus loading of 0.26 g/m2/year is a little
more than that proposed by Vollenweider (Vollenweider and Dillon,
1974) as an oligotrophic loading (see page 12).
2. Non-point sources--Non-point sources accounted for 98.3%
of the total phosphorus load during the sampling year. The Stehekin
River contributed 51.5%, Railroad Creek contributed 5.8%, and the
ungaged minor tributaries and immediate drainage contributed an
estimated 34.2%.

III. WATER QUALITY SUMMARY
Lake Chelan was sampled three times during the open-water season of
1975 by means of a pontoon-equipped Huey helicopter. Each time, samples
for physical and chemical parameters were collected from a number of depths
at six stations on the lake in July and from seven stations in April and
September (see map, page v). During each visit, a single depth-integrated
(4.6 m to surface) sample was composited from the stations for phytoplankton
identification and enumeration; and during the last visit,,two 18.9-liter
depth-integrated samples were composited for algal assays. Also each time,
a depth-integrated sample was collected from each of the stations for
chlorophyll a^ analysis. The maximum depths sampled were 11.6 meters at
station 1 and 67.1 meters at each of the other six stations.
The sampling results are presented in full in Appendix C and are sum-
marized in the following table.

2. Discussion -
The control yields of the assay alga, Selenastrum capri-
cornutum, indicate that the potential primary productivity of
Lake Chelan was moderate at the time samples were collected
(09/11/75). Also, the significant increases in yields with the
addition of orthophosphorus alone indicate phosphorus limita-
tion at that time. Note that the addition of nitrogen alone
resulted in yields not significantly different from those of
the controls.
The lake data indicate phosphorus limitation in April and
September; i.e., the mean inorganic nitrogen/orthophosphorus
ratios were 17/1 or greater. However, nitrogen limitation is
indicated in July; i.e., the mean N/P ratio was 8/1, and nitrogen
limitation would be expected (N/P ratios of 14/1 or greater
generally indicate phosphorus limitation).

IV. NUTRIENT LOADINGS
(See Appendix D for data)
For the determination of nutrient loadings, the Washington National
Guard collected monthly near-surface grab samples from each of the tribu-
tary sites indicated on the map (page v). Sampling was begun in September,
1974, and was completed in October, 1975.
Stream flows are those reported by the U.S. Geological Survey (Anonymous,
1976) and are the average discharges for 54 years of record on the Stehekin
River (U.S.G.S. station 12451000) and 71 years record on the Chelan River
(U.S.G.S. station 124525000). Water diverted through the aqueduct is
unmeasured, and flow is estimated by U.S.G.S. (station 12452000). The flow
for Railroad Creek is that given in a previous report on Lake Chelan
(Cunningham and Pine, 1968).
In this report, nutrient loads for sampled tributaries were calculated
from mean annual concentrations and mean annual flows. Nutrient loads for
unsampled "minor tributaries and inrnediate drainage" ("ZZ" of U.S.G.S.) were
estimated using the mean concentrations in Stink Creek, Poison Creek, Twenty
Five Mile Creek, Grade Creek, Prince Creek, and Moon Creek at stations C-l,
D-l, E-l, F-l, G-l, and K-l and the mean annual ZZ flow.
The operator of Manson waste treatment plant did not participate, and
nutrient loads were estimated at 1.134 kg P and 3.401 kg N/capita/year.

F. Yearly Loads:
In the following table, the existing phosphorus loadings are
compared to those proposed by Vollenweider (Vollenweider and Dillon,
1974). Essentially, his "dangerous" loading is one at which the
receiving water would become eutrophic or remain eutrophic; his
"permissible" loading is that which would result in the receiving
water remaining oligotrophic or becoming oligotrophic if morphometry
permitted. A mesotrophic loading would be considered one between
"dangerous" and "permissible".
Note that Vollenweider's model may not be applicable to water
bodies with short hydraulic retention times.
