Dufour October 4, 1978 informatics 6011 Executive Boulevard Rockville Maryland 20852 (301)770-3000 ------- TABLE OF.CONTENTS Pace Introductory Note i Bibliography Humans •*• Laboratory Animals 16 Domestic Animals 27 ------- UPDATED BIBLIOGRAPHY OF RECENT LITERATURE ON THE CARDIOVASCULAR AND OTHER NON-AUDITORY 'EFFECTS OF NOISE Introductory Note This bibliography is a continuation of the Spring 1977 literature search on the non-auditory effects of noise, emphasizing the cardiovascular effects, The same sources were searched from 1975 to the present. Only the new articles on non-auditory effects, especially cardiovascular effects, have been included. The previous searca strategy was expanded to include articles on the physiological mechanisms of stress. Since noise acts as a stressor, understanding the effects of stress is important in evaluating the potential damage of noise to humans. The volume of scientific literature on stress has reached massive levels in recent years, since professionals in a variety of fields such as occupational health, sociology, psychology, and biology, are concerned about the adverse effects of stress. Aspects of stress that were selected for this bibliography included the startle or arousal response of animals to stress, classical studies on the General Adaptation Syndrome (developed by Selye), and articles dealing with stress-related metabolism and physio- pathology. The bibliography has been divided into three sections according to the experimr-rital subjects used. All studies on humans are in the first section. Some of these studies were done on both humans and laboratory animals. The second section includes studies on only laboratory animals (rats, mice, guinea pigs, etc.). The last section includes studies on domestic animals, such as cows, pigs, and sheep. ------- I. HUMANS Aberg, H. Stress in the pathogenesis of hypertension.
