                                     Introduction
Cape Cod, Massachusetts residents rely solely on groundwater for domestic use. Long considered a pristine
resource in abundant supply, recent contamination of both public and private suply wells has demonstrated
the need for increased committment to the protection of this resource. To meet this need, US Environmental
Protection Agency's Region 1 Office (EPA) and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Quality
Engineering (DEQE), in cooperation with the Cape Cod Planning and Economic Development Commission
(CCPEDC) and the US Geological Survey Boston office (USGS), initiated a two-year study to examine the
adequacy of existing groundwater protection programs and recommend improvements. It was decided that
survey of available sources of information on groundwater in Cape Cod would be helpful.

The initial effort was to identify those items, primarily books and reports, and later individual maps, which the
participating agencies: EPA, DEQE, CCPEDC, and USGS have in their respective offices. Although only the
EPA has a formalized library, the other agencies have a designated office or shelf for their listed materials. A
few non-owned items were added to the inventory because of their potential interest to the Cape Cod project.
The result was a consolidated list of over 300 reports, books, maps and journal articles dealing with groundwater
related topics with emphasis on Cape Cod, particularly Barnstable and Eastham.

To make the listing easier to use, we separated it by type of material: bibliographic citations and map references.
While bibliographies are generally listed by author, we chose to list by title because the emphasis in this
collection was on subject related material and many of the references did not have authors. Information on each
title may include source of publication, date, author, and abstract or publication or type of map; location, if
owned by one of the participating agencies and call number (for publications].
The key to agency holdings is:

CCPEDC: Cape Cod Planning and Economic Development Commission, 1st District Court House,

The New Alchemy: How to Survive in Your Spare Time
 Smithsonian, Feb. 1975, Vol. 5, N 11, p. 82-88
 Page, James K.
The formation of the new Alchemy Institute which deals with the ocean in regard to wind power, solar power,
less energy-intensive and more economically sound farming practices and fish culture. In addition, the
institute's projects and outlooks on science and nature are discussed.

The Management of Toxic and Hazardous Materials in a Zone of Contribution on Cape Cod
paper presented at "FOCUS on Eastern Regional Ground WAter Issues,"
 Burlington, VT, July 14-16,1987.
 Gallagher, Tara and Steppacher, Lee
Overall presence of toxic and hazardous material in the Zone is summarized and the risk to present and
future well sites examined. The comprehensive protection of toxic and hazardous materials that exists on
paper is contrasted to the patchwork protection observed. Options are presented for the resolution of
 these program inadequacies.
