MANAGEMENT ASSISTANCE
GRANTS
•33 STATES HAVE
DELEGATED PERMIT
PROGRAMS
EPA approved 289 grants totaling $79 million in May.  Total
grant dollars awarded during the first eight months of FY 1982
decreased $1.1 billion when compared to the same period of FY
1981.  ($681 million compared to $1.8 billion for the eight
months period ending May 31, 1981.)  (p. 8.)

During the first eight months of FY 1982, Headquarters awarded
372 grants totaling $54.9 million dollars.  Water Pollution
Control - Research received 23% of these funds, (p. 2.)
Since April 1980, EPA awarded State Management Assistance grants
totaling $303 million to 46 states and one territory (Puerto
Rico). These grants provide funds for states to employ staff to
administer segments of the WWT Construction Grants program delegated
to them by EPA.  (p. 20.)

In accordance with Section 402(b) of the Clean Water Act, 33 states
administer delegated permit programs limiting discharges into
navigable waters within each state jurisdiction,  (p. 21.)
